Halasana

I wonder if anyone else experiences this: when I am in halasana I get a strong feeling of claustrophobia. I am a bit agoraphobic (uncomfortable in crowds) to start with, but I thought after these many years practicing I would get over it by now. It’s very distracting and I often lose my breath.

Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

Have you taken this opportunity to watch the phobia creep up on you, to dispassionately observe it’s progress?

I have a feeling that’s gonna take some time.

I try to focus on the feeling, like when I sometimes get a foot cramp, etc., and see if I can breathe my way through - and I usually do. Some days, I can manage 5 breaths, then I’m outta there. Other days I can linger. But the feeling never goes away.

Is it claustrophobia or the fear of going within yourself? This is a very introspective position and that can be very confrontational for some students and subsequently feel suffocating.

What else would it take? And what else, equally precious, would you have to offer in exchange for learning this secret your soul has presented to you?

I wish you every courage as you explore.

Thanks Techne. Not as scary as being in a small room with a large hairy angry ape wanting my banana, but disruptive enough to get my attention.
