Hamstring Tendon pain

I have had slight pain, sometimes dull, in certain poses it can be sharp, in my right hamstring tendon. The pain seems to be localised around the inner knee area and I can particularly feel it in poses like Parsvottanasana. Of course, at the point when I feel any pain I loosen the pose or stop. Before I spoke to my teacher about it because I thought it was my knee by after closer inspection, I believe it is my tendon, going up towards my sit-bone. Or one of the tendons in this region. But the pain is most prominent in the lower inner thigh towards the knee.

I think this is not yoga related pain as I have a feeling this pain may have existed before. What does one do with tendon related pain? I intend to talk to my teacher again tomorrow. The pain is not unbearable but if I attempt, say, a wide seated forward bend I can really feel an uncomfortable pull on my tendons. Of course I intend to discuss with my teacher further, but is there anything I can do to help the situation?

Please check in Parsvottanasana to see if the pain is lessened when the femur is a) slightly rotated externally, and b) when the inner thighs are moving away from each other (as in apart, widened on the mat laterally, etc).

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, the pay does lessen when I do both of the above. Especially when my femur rotates externally.

i wonder if this also has anything to do with height, as in this problem is common with taller people? i am 171cm (for a girl i guess I am tall) and a skinny build.

Next please have someone assist you in the pose at issue. The helper should catch the mid thigh with one hand on inner and one on the outer thigh then move the thigh flesh toward the knee joint while you are in the pose. Less pain or more?

Meanwhile please also try Eka Pada Supta Virasana (ideally on foam pads, folded blanket, or block if your body is not able to do it flat on the floor) twice per day for 9 breaths.

Oh, and at 5’ 6" no this does not have anything to do with your height.

Thanks so much Gordon, this forum is very lucky to have someone with the wealth of experience you have commenting!

The pain actually lessens when that happens. I notice it also affects my left leg to, my the right leg gets it the worst.

I will incorporate the above pose into my routine.

While I don’t “diagnose”, am not a medical professional, nor should anything I say be mistaken for medical advice … this sounds like it’s muscular and I’d point to the Sartorius as culprit.

Thank you Gordon!
