Headrush help

I’m fairly new to yoga and i notice when i try to do any inversions theres intense pressure to my head and it feels like my head will explode if i dont quickly stop. Is this normal and is there anyway to get around it? Sometimes it doesn’t happen but it usually does. Sometimes it happens even if im just doing a standing forward bend. I’m only 26 years old and i’m in great shape. Is it my diet, not being warmed up enough, or what? I can’t figure it out.

Dear Happy yoga,

Inversions challenge your body’s ability to maintain it’s blood pressure. Breath holding or labored breath can interfere with the pressure, as will efforting with muscles which are not prepared to support the unusual position. Are you practicing inversions under the guidance of a yoga instructor? What is the quality of your breath during inversion? Have you had your blood pressure checked?

I would recommend that you have an experienced teacher observe your practice of inversions and provide in person guidance. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras provide the principles for yoga practice. YS II, 46 “Sthira Sukham Asanam” we look for comfort (sukha) and steadiness (sthira) in asana. Without these qualities, we may harm ourselves.

Please practice with loving kindness toward your self.
Namaste,
Chandra

Of course you should have a regular checkup to make sure your body is functioning normally. But that beeing said.

When I first started I had the same experience. The chemistry (amount of oxygen in the brain via cappilarie) changes dramatically when doing an inversion. You may find that some teachers want you to experience a headrush at times. Its not all bad…

My feeling is that as you practice more and more your body will get used to inversions. The amount of cappilaries increase throughout your body as you continue to practice (yes your body grows new ones.) Your body will develop the ability to process this change more rapidly. There was an interesting article about the changes one experiences with vigorous exercise. in Harvar Medical Magazine. I will post in a photo section if possible. yes it is perfectly normal. Go and see a doctor if the problem persists. Namastae.
