For a beginning student it is best to approach the tension by doing something to ease the discomfort. And so poses that teach you how to engage the serratus anterior (which you can google) will release neck tension. Additionally, when Gomukhasana and Garudasana are properly done they too will assist. Both postures (for ease) can be done while sitting in Virasana. Shoulderstand preps will also be helpful and there are specific things I do to deal with these things in the bodies of my students.
An intermediate student would add to this the looking at the source of the stress so as to not be putting out the fire with lighter fluid. If one continues doing that which leads to tension in the neck then there will be tension in the neck no matter how profound the asana practice is.
Finally, please do not roll the neck, ever. It is less that healthy for the vertebra. What is safe is to tip the head forward and backward (flexion and extension), tip it side to side (ear to shoulder), and traction the neck in a neutral position.
