Health benefits of Yoga?

What are the health benefits of Yoga? I tend to sit around and I don’t really exercise much.

If I started doing Yoga for 15-30 minutes a day, and I followed this regime for an entire month, how would I feel? Would there be a substantial difference after an entire month of practicing Yoga?

Yoga has many benefits to physical health…and some schools of yoga make lots of very odd claims about benefits…read some books…look at some yoga web sites…you will find lots of info…

Changes will happen slowly…a month of only a few minutes a day is a good start but is possibly not enough to see many changes yet.

Are you going to classes?
What are you doing? What asana? what pranayama? any meditation?

Thank you for the information! Very informative. As of now, I have not started doing Yoga. I am just studying up on it and trying to familiarize myself with it and what benefits it possesses. I just want to be healthy you know? I am not attending any classes because I just recently became employed so my schedule is tight but I will try to find some local classes and go. Could you tell me what “Asana”, “Pranayama” mean? I have no idea of this terminology. I am not very knowledgeable of Yoga unfortunately. Thank you!

Asanas are the postures/stretches.
Pranayama is breathing exercises.

Well you are in luck because there is a lot of yoga you can do sitting around.

If you were only going to give a month to just about any new activity.
How would you know if you were suited to continue?
It might be too little time, it might be too much time.

Isn’t there a general rule of 3 months, isn’t there a yogic rule of multiple lifetimes?

Well reminds me of the Martini quote. One is not enough, two is too many and three is just right.

There are two way for good health one is Exercise and Yoga.Yoga is helpful to our health. By the yoga you can get good fitness. Your mind power and stamina can be improve. There is also useful to decrease your bally and fats. it is useful to good blood circulation, and pulse rate.

Does yoga eliminate the risk of cancer or other diseases?

Yoga is good for the body in many different ways:

 • Strengthens the back
 • Balances the blood circulation
 • Improves the flexibility of the body
 • Subtly balances the function of the glands
 • and many more.

Yoga prevents different diseases and improves the health.

is it helpful for skinny people, who have already no fats?

Of course. Yoga is a state of being, not only the exercises, so it is helpful for all people, disregarding race, religion, sex or type of the body.

so is it also useful for gaining weight, more fats and figure?

If that is what you want, why not. My experience with yoga is, that it makes us feel comfortable the way we are, and accept ourself the way we are now. Not in the future. Yoga is here and now.

@ Matrix

If you are looking for some physiological change, that typically takes about 21 days (to 6 weeks) of consistent practice. While 15 minutes is certainly better than no minutes it isn’t a particularly effective amount of time for someone wanting instant gratification. Yoga is not a microwave. It’s benefits, whatever they might be, are not served up steaming hot in 30 days.

As to how YOU would feel there isn’t any one on the planet capable of telling you that. Most people don’t even know how THEY feel and therefore are not in any position whatsoever to determine the feelings, kinetic or potential, of another. Only you will know how you feel after you’ve done it and stopped to do the feeling. We’d all be anxious to know the results of your experiment.

@ Peace23
A full yoga practice (one that offers more than poses) that is properly transmitted to a willing student truly seeking growth moves the student toward balanced living. In the specific case you broach it allows the student to find their optimum weight AND accept themselves (self love) on a very deep level. Oddly, a poorly conveyed practice to a student with no intention or willingness, that practice has very little results at all.

Thank you for your reply!
Can you please answer my Weight gain question listed in this forum.

Thanks

Do you need to gain weight?
Are you eating enough? do you think you should talk with a therapist about how much you are eating and how you feel about food?

Do you need to see a doctor about any metabolic issues?

Do some strength building exercises and eating correctly will help you to get to a healthy weight.
Having a low body fat is better than a high body fat.

Speak to your teacher…it is difficult to give you a good answer without actually seeing you.

I can tell you that if I did 30 minutes of yoga every day for a month, I would certainly feel good!

The benefits of yoga are too numerous to list here. At some point, you will have to trust in a decision to move forward and practise. Afterall, 5,000 years and billions of yogis later…how can you go wrong?

Yoga saying: Don’t just do something, sit there!

If Kundalini is awakened shewill purify all chakras.

This is correct, however my guru used to say that it is (almost) impossible to achieve it without diksha (initiation). I’ve read the same from Sivananda.
