Health problem after practicing uddhiyana bandha

Hi

After I practised uddhiyana bandha on one fine morning, I feel my stomach and abdomen are upset.I feel a mild burning sensation all over my intestines all day. Also After the meals, I burp with a bit large amount of gas than normal.

is this serious?

Can any one help me on this regard ?

Honestly after my Ashtanga Practice things are opened up and air is flowing more than usual.

Ududdhiyana Bandha- as I know (and I am not a teacher nor and I providing professtional advice, just opinions on the topis) From what I know about this Bandha is that it is an energy lock that is powerful and you are traping your air/tapas in a certain energy channel for a few breaths.
Did you just practice this Bandha or was it after your asana practice?

Here is some information from the internet. However, if you have a teacher I would recommend discussing your reactions.
I had issues during backbending. To find out that I am hurting my spine more than helping. So I back to modified bridge, which is where I should be. Your teachers are wonderful tools.
Best of luck!

I didn’t precede this bandha with any asana.I just practised it. But it was very helpful the whole day. There were lot of toxins eliminated through urine and sweat during the day.But the problem started the next day when i felt uncomfortable in having food.

I stay in bangalore. Can you suggest me good books or teachers on Yoga to which we can rely on?

Hello Vasu,

My position relative to bandhas is as follows:

Most students doing such practices are doing them without integrity. By that I mean they are not properly learned, properly used, or properly practiced. That, even with a golden practice, creates a level of disharmony in the practitioner. There could also be, in that practitioner, some “benefits” however I find them outweighed by the disharmony.

I have been practicing for a decade. For the last six years of my studies I’ve been with what I consider to be a master teacher. I have not, in that time done Uddiyana Bandha on more than one occasion.

Frankly, I’m a bit shocked that “yoga teachers” instruct students in such a thing soon after they graduate from beginner. Imagine my amazement when it’s done by those not instructed at all.

The residue in one’s particular body from one’s particular practice may not be “serious” however I tend to view bandhas and shatkarmas and pranayama as serious in the first place and so when they are taken lightly and done as though they were elixirs without the support of the surrounding practice(s) who really knows what goes on.

If one have concerns then I’d advise seeing a health care professional of their choosing AND I’d advise learning Yoga from a highly trained teacher and perhaps discontinuing the bandha until said teacher deems it appropriate to be learned and practiced.

Greetings Vasu,
Were you doing it on an empty stomach? Only on an exhalation? Had you done any asanas in preparation? What had you eaten for the three meals you had prior to the burning sensation in your stomach?

I was instructed on this asana many years ago and like Inner Athlete rightly says, it should only be done when you are both ready and under the watchful eye of an experienced teacher.

Perhaps you can see a doctor to find out if you could have a gastrointesinal condition.
