Hello

Hi, everyone!

My name is Lucian, and I’m from Romania. I’ve been interested in Yoga for more than a year, but I haven’t had the chance to practice it in an organized form yet. I know every book on Yoga advises learning with a teacher, so I didn’t feel confident about starting on my own. The only exception are a few asanas I’m practicing because I’ve had some back and neck problems. The pain is now gone so that’s a good start.

There is one thing I would like to ask you. I’ve read about breath control exercises and how it’s mandatory that one learns them with an experienced person. However, for a couple of weeks I’ve been doing a simple exercise because I figured it would be no harm. The exercise consists of breathing in to the count of 8, and then breathing out to the count of 8. Now, ever since I started doing them I’ve had some really weird dreams. I don’t know if they are a cause of the exercises, so that’s what I wanted to ask you. Could be that I’m doing the exercise wrong, and this has caused these dreams? What are the consequences of wrongly doing breathing exercises?

Thanks,
Lucian

Lucian – welcome to the forums! I look forward to the replies your inquiry will receive.

Hello Lucian…I cant help with an answer but welcome

Kind Regards Kareng

Hi, guys! Thanks for the welcoming.

Hi lucian welcome to the forum.

Can’t anyone answer that question for me?

Lucian,
I suspect this is one of those questions where, in order to actually be helpful, someone would need more information about you than can comfortably be given electronically. A teacher would be able to see you in your asanas and your breathing, and would be able to ask you questions and hear your response, and that communicates just so much more than typing can.
It’s been about a month since your original post. Have the dreams persisted? Have you maintained this breathing exercise?

Hi, Techne,

I’ve maintained the exercises, but the dreams have stopped. The most important question that I needed asking was “What are the consequences of wrongly doing breathing exercises?” I’m curious because I want to try other exercises, and I want to know what would be the consequences of doing something incorrectly so I can stop.

Btw, can I post here a link to a youtube channel that presents some yoga classes and ask your opinion about it?

Lucian,
From what I’ve read (especially here), the consequences are as varied and subtle as the imbalances everyone has in their system when they start. And, even taking that as your starting point, there might not be a 1:1 correlation. Again, reason for finding a teacher.

I’d be happy to receive the link via private message if there are particular classes you have in mind. We tend not to post links like that in general on the forum, preferring to maintain these forums as a place for discussion rather than youtube proliferation. I can’t promise that I’ll get to them as quickly as I’d like.

Techne

Hi, Techne,

Thanks for all your suggestions. I know a teacher would be the best solution. Unfortunately, I can’t afford any classes at the moment, so I’m trying to experience the benefits of yoga on my own.

I will send you a private message with the link to the channel I mentioned for whenever you can to check it and send me your impression.

Thank you,

Lucian
