Help me with Giddiness and Low Blood Pressure

Hi All:

Iam new to YOGA and have been practicing for the past one month. Before getting into my query, just a small introduction about my problem of low pressure.

I have been once rejected while I voluntarily participated in donating blood citing the pressure to be low. That was before 5-6 yrs. Apart from that, once I have fainted down while serving as an attendant to my father in hospital during his surgery. Later came to know it was due to low blood pressure, but even that was before 4-5 yrs and never felt that again.

At around 7th day of practicing YOGA, I felt like blackened out on a single day for couple of times during the day. But that did not happened again. On 27th day, after doing the first few customary positions (lying down) and trying to get up, I was completely dominated by the giddiness. When I tried to regain my composure it went even worse accompanied with a vomiting sensation. Forced to cut down for that day. The same thing happened even next day.

Been to the centre and explained them. They discount saying it to be something related to the food I have taken. But then while performing YOGA on the centre itself, I had it once again. My pressure was checked twice in a gap of two hours - 120/75 and 110/75…

Any remedies from experts???

Students with low blood pressure (LBP) should be practicing asana based on low blood pressure. There are things to do and things not to do. These things should be imparted by the teacher. If the teacher does not know then one who does know should be sought.

My thinking is inline with InnerAthlete’s. Since you are in Chennai, my best recommendation is to go to the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandrimfor a personal Yoga therapy consultation and have your Ayurvedic pulses diagnosed. The causes of low blood pressure are often layered within the doshas and working directly with a practioner will assist you in making sense of it all.

Thanks InnerAthelete and Nichole for your replies. Infact I practice at KYM.

Upon me explaining the problem to the instructor, he has taken the advice of a medical practitioner who has inturn checked my BP to certify that Iam okay (showed 120/75 and 110/75 after a hour).

Iam really worried that this problem should not get severe upon practicing YOGA as I do not want to end up digging my own grave. Instead in such cases I would prefer quit YOGA and lead a healthy life. I made a mistake of not mentioning this low blood pressure symptom at the initial application form. Not sure whether that would have made some different. In first place, I myself not sure whether Iam having a LOW BP.

Can I quit YOGA for 2-3 days and see the difference?

PS: I really want to practice YOGA on long term and master it

Hi, surprise. It looks like you’ve picked a good name for yourself – you’re having symptoms of low blood pressure even when folks think your resting rate is not indicative.
In my situation (health insurance + small city in the US) I would pursue this with an MD. If you don’t know what is causing you to black out or be overcome by giddiness that’s Bad – it could come up while you are in a less safe place than a yoga studio.
I’ll bet there are lots of other things in a person’s life that could contribute to your symptoms (nutrition, lack of breath, who knows. . . ) and with well-educated help you should be able to figure out safely whether you can continue with your intent to master asanas.

Hi Techne, thanks for your reply. As indicated earlier that this has started only after I practice YOGA. But given the frequency it has come… only twice in 20+ days, I suspect other activities and my health too…

I am planning to rest practicing YOGA for 2-3 days and observe whether any giddiness happens during the course of the day. If not, then I can safely point my fingers on YOGA asanas. If it was zeroed in YOGA, need to discuss with my instructor on future plans

If you cannot perfectly zero in with those resting rate for low blood pressure, any other way to confirm that those symptoms of low blood pressure to be correct.

I am resting today and plan to do it for next couple of days without YOGA. But doing some ground exercises… Will keep posted here in this thread on the happenings

Exactly resting for month from doing YOGA exercises, I never felt any sort of dizziness or any other reactions. Hence I can safely assume that there are some by products, though not sure whether its positive or negative, on practicing YOGA.

Started back a week ago and there are no giddiness upon completion of some breathing exercises mid way of performing yoga.

But somewhere around 2-3 times a day maximum, I get a very strange feeling in my body. For example, while I was discussing with someone & when I get this strange feeling, my concentration completely gets into the feeling & my listening volume was reduced by 50%. Even the contents listening will too become poor. This is exactly for less than 10 seconds after which everything will be normal. During that strange feeling its something like “dreaming in a very deep sleep”. Need to exactly watch out what my mind thinks during that time…

Any inputs would be appreciated
