Hi, new girl here :)

I have been thinking about starting yoga for a while now. Everyone I talk to really praise it and tell me how I should give it a try.
So my questions are: I don’t really have the money at the moment to go to classes so would a DVD do for the time being? If so could you recommend any? How many times a week should I do it? Are there any diets I should follow and where can I find out about all the different types of yoga and what will suit me best?
Also is there anything else I should know or think about before I start?

Thanks

For someone just starting out I would recomment the Hatha Yoga I and II books by Samskirti. They were printed in the 1970’s and are out of print but you can find them used pretty easily online.

Find a good yoga instructor. There is a lot more going on in a good yoga class that is hard to pick up from a book. A good yoga teacher also has a presence.

Hi, I am also new here. I have done yoga off and on, mostly off for perhaps 4 years now. I started out with a six week class, which was only once a week. I have done a couple of other classes, only going one or two times, always because the drive was so far.

I’m glad to say that I have restarted at home using a tape by Suzanne Deason. I have some others by Rodney Yee. The main thing is that I have kept it up for 46 days straight, 45 minutes per day.

On some days it’s hard to make myself do it, just like exercise, but once I get started it feels good. I’m also doing other things, which maybe goes along with it…for example, hiking out in the woods, and meditating, or at least trying - my mind wanders awfully.

I do notice subtle changes since all of this. It’s rare that I’m depressed. I think my food choices have gotten better. I have more energy. Can’t say that I’ve gotten slim, which I would like, but maybe weight loss will eventually kick in.
