I am diagnosed with hiatus hernia, can any one please tell me what yoga poses are safe to do in this condition?
Hello Nithin,
It is much easier to answer the opposite question: What practices are unsafe to do? Basically, I would avoid poses that increase the pressure in the abdomen because this may force the stomach through the small gap in the diaphragm. Certainly avoid bow (dhanurasana), cobra (bhujangasana), locust (shalabhasana) and excessive twisting such as caused by ardha matsyendrasana. Likewise, don’t do bellows breath (bhastrika) and uddiyana bandha. Straining, such as caused by lifting heavy weights, coughing or constipation is no good either.
Personally, I don’t think that yoga poses can cure hiatal hernia. However, yoga - in the more general sense - can help you to manage the symptoms, such as regurgitation and acid reflux. This requires a multidimensional approach, where you need to be willing to adapt your lifestyle and diet and to immerse yourself in the practices of yoga. You would need to pursue this face to face with a yoga therapist or an ayurvedic doctor.
One suggestion is to sit in vajrasana (kneeling on the floor) for at least 5 minutes after meals. This improves digestion. You can also take up yoga nidra or meditation to calm your nervous system.
Have you visited a chiropractor about this problem?
I personally suffered from a hiatal hernia about two years ago, and suffered from much discomfort for a long time not knowing what the problem was.
I visited my chiropractor who discovered the hernia, and he forced the stomach back down through the diaphram, and back into place (this sounds worse than it is - although it did hurt! lol). I felt great for a few days, then it slipped back up again. Again he forced it down, I avoided any pressure on my gut for some time, and have not had an issue with it since.
Hi I am another sufferer from New Delhi.
Could anyone tell me about a chiropractor in New Delhi?

Actually the symptoms of a hiatal/hiatus hernia are heartburn and sometimes food backing up into the esophagus.
I didn’t have much heartburn, but had some stomach discomfort just below my ribs after eating a full meal. Sometimes it was very uncomfortable.
As for your breathing problem, perhaps you should visit a doctor and have yourself diagnosed. Hiatal/hiatus hernia doesn’t cause a breathing problem. You may have something else going on.
