My student had cancer one year ago and is relatively healthy and pain free after being treated traditionally for her cancer. While in apansana, her left hip joint was moving out of place each time she drew her knees into her chest. There was no pain but there was a loud noise and her entire hip joint moved down towards the mat and further left a bit. Any ideas?

dont do apanasana:)
offer her some other poses with the same benefits.
i teach yoga for those with hip THR and they can not do apanasana as well… there are plenty of safe poses
As the hip does not leave the floor in Apanasana I’m not sure what you mean by her entire hip joint moved down towards the mat , but I would suggest she consult a physio.
If drawing the knee into the chest is causing the buttock/hip to come of the floor then she needs to practise the pose without using her hands and see what difference that makes.
maybe she is pressing too hard on the knees? does her hip “pops out” in any other poses where she brings her stomach to her laps? soundsmore like a ligament slips of the join
