Home practice?

Hi everyone,
Do any of you have a primarily home based practice? (ie using videos, your own routine, etc.) rather than going to classes several times a week?
Since I’ve been practicing, I’ve been able to attend several classes a week which has been wonderful. However, my work hours are shifting and I will be busy with a second job Monday-Friday all day until 8pm…and I’ll also be working Saturday morning-late afternoon. This will make it incredibly difficult to attend yoga classes on a regular basis.
I’m am thinking of purchasing some yoga videos so that I can set up my own practice at home. Do any of you busy people out there do this? Also, do you have any suggestions on good level 2(ish) videos? I know Yogaworks has some good ones, I’d also be interested in any other Ashtanga or Vinyasa flow type videos.

~Thanks!~

PS. do you think it’s possible to have a fulfilling practice primarily at home?

I know Baron Baptise has some flow type videos. Yoga Journal’s website also has some podcast yoga practice too.

I have tried to practice at home when I moved to a new city and when I was in search of a good yoga studio. In preparation for this hiatus, I asked the permission of the teachers at my old studio to record (audio) the class and transferred the file to my iPad. I can then practice a sequence that I am familiar with at home.

However, I find that home practice needs a lot of self discipline and I am not that type. Also it lacks the tips from the teacher on correctly doing a pose, and the adjustments which are useful. I also like the energy during a class practice.

Hello,
In this fast paced life everyone is busy with nothing and everything.
Home practice is a great way to explore yourself but for some it requires lots of dedication and self-disciplined; This is what yoga is for to bring the best out of you.
You can check out videos of Shiva Rea, David Swenson, Matthew sweeney, youtube , read articles to keep the flame burning. Research about significance of alignement and sequences. Buy “Light on Yoga” by BKS Iyengar to check the authenticity of the postures.

The most important practice regularly:)

When I first started practicing, my options for classes were limited so I supplemented with videos.

For me - I found it hard to find a video that was at my level of fitness and interest. Plus, I became bored quickly with videos - even with those that you could make up your own sequencing (like Shiva Rea’s). I have a shelf of videos that I’ve only watched 2-3 times - let alone actually done the routines all the way through.

About 3 months ago I hit on yogaglo. A yoga teacher suggested it to me. There are some other online yoga class companies also that you could check out.

What I find about yogaglo that is good for me is I can find a level of class that is right for my level of fitness. And, I can try different kinds of yoga. They also offer meditation and philosophy classes. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg…about the cost per month of 1 to 2 classes. Oh, and I think most of these online yoga places offer a 2 week trial so you don’t have much to lose.

It’s working for me. I still try to get to 2 LIVE classes per week but I’ve found that my home practice has really become daily now.

Good luck.

Primarily home-based practice? I suppose I qualify. I go to class once per week with my teacher for 2-1/2 hours. The remainder of my practice is at home. Though I do occasionally go to a level I or II class during the week when the mood strikes me.

However, I don’t use books or videos for my home practice. Since I’m a teacher I tend not to need such things so my situation is different. My view is that the in-class sessions should contribute to the home practice. When they do not, we, as students, are not receiving a robust practice or curriculum.

home practice is the best and is a must if you want to rip a benefits of yoga

You will get benefit of only doing yoga asanas once or twice a week. We dont “must” do it home to get the benefit. But doing it everyday incl. pranayama and meditation we get the results quicker than doing it once a week.

Also lots of people would not be able to handle it if it was to quick.

well by the home practice i meant daily practice

I do.

Sorry, I could make suggestions but I’m not sure what you mean by level 2. The YogaWorks Body Slim DVD is good but very fast paced if that is what you are looking for, the other 2 in the series are slower/lighter (my preference). You can preview clips of yoga DVDs at www.totalfitnessdvds.com (my preference) and www.collagevideo.com to see what appeals to you. They’ll also provide you with different levels and descriptions.
