Hours of sleep

hai, i want to know the numbers of hours a person really need to sleep. as average an adult need at least 7 hours sleeping. but i believe this may vary from one person to another person. how about those doing yoga daily for many years. does less sleeping hours like 5-6hrs enough for them. i believe the hours of sleep got related to the daily routine, activity, emotion and so on. can anybody advice me on this? thank u

I believe its different for everyone. I personally need a lot of sleep to feel rested. I wake up at 8 am on weekdays and usually go to sleep between 11-12:30 ish. If I got sleep later than that I usually feel tired and have a hard time waking up. I would say I need a minimum of 8-9 hours to feel rested. I got to yoga 4 -5 days a week and my classes are 1 hour and half to 1 hour and fourty five minutes if that helps you.

It would depend on your constitution (Ayurvedic Body Type) and the way(s) in which you live.

If you’re looking for a source of your fatigue there are a plethora of culprits all around.

I’m one that needs at least 8 hours of sleep. If I get 7, I don’t feel fully rested. I have had times when I’ve slept for 13 hours, like after my second work week at a new job. I was amazed I needed that much sleep! The next night, I woke refreshed after only 8 hours. It was interesting. Yes, it has much to do with your body type and your daily life I think.

Six hours should be enough for a yogi, preferably waking up at brahma muhurta. If you need 8 hours of sleep, then you need to take a hard look at your yoga practice and your lifestyle.

One on the path of yoga should always be taking a “hard look” at their yoga practice and lifestyle.

That’s true, but needing a lot of sleep is another reason to evaluate what you are doing. It might mean that someone is working too much in the exhaustion-exertion cycle. Athletes for example need more sleep, because they are always breaking themselves down. But it can also be mental. A student for example can have a lot of stress, because not taking the right approach to studying.

It really depends from person to person.

Eg Edison neded 4 hrs of sleep while Einstein needed 9 hrs of sleep.

The advanced yoga -for lack of a better wording-emphasizes less sleep. Yogananda was sleeping 2 hrs, but he compensated this with meditation, which is more resting than sleep.

Sleep is probably the most natural mean for the body defence and regeneration.

Effective sleep is not only bed hours.

Lack of proper sleep leads to a multitude of diseases and accidents.

There is even a proposal to let the plain pilots sleep on the job, conditions permitting.

Here you have a recent report about the bad consequences of too little sleep,
on a national scale:

hai oak 33, truly agree with u,…its all about effective sleep. and it’s not depend on the hours of sleep. u get the best sleep if u feel refreshed the next day u wake up in the morning.we know that 7 hours is the best average sleeping hours. but some may sleep for 6hours only and feel refreshed the moment they wake up. while some of them sleep for even 10 hours but wake up feel tired. so it’s all about the peace of mind, thought and your lifestyle that control your effective sleep. one need to have peace of mind for effective sleep which can avoid u from sleeping longer hours and taking much of your time in other things. i’m sure there are certain asanas in yoga apart from yoga nidra that can prepare you for better sleep.
