How do I know if I'm ignorant?
Ignorance is the ‘truth of the day’ that needs correction when a truer truth is known. Ignorance by choice makes one unaware of any difference between the two.

Ignorance too evolves by diminishing in inverse proportion to wisdom. The pinnacle of wisdom is knowing the truth about Purusha and Prakruti that needs no correction any more.
Yes. It goes beyond not knowing a thing. In the face of the truth, when one looks the other way - that is ignorant. It implies awareness of the truth, but arrogant refusal to accept it.

How can a sunset be pure or impure?

A sunset is considered to be something beautiful by many people. They say it is “pure”, “divine” “beautiful” However, it is just as defiled as any thing else in this world. It is not pure white light, but light separated it into a mixture of colours. It is made out of millions of photons which are created and destroyed every moment. Everything in this world is possessed of the same nature.

It is all just a dance of destruction. If you can spot that you will get wisdom
If someone says, “I can’t do yoga because I don’t believe in devil worship,” isn’t that being “ignorant,” and how does this tie in with all these allegedly scientific definitions about ignorance?

This example is more in-line with the gist of the original post.
That is just what ignorance is. Mistaking something for what it isn’t.

Even you know Yoga is not devil worship. So you know people who hold these views hold ignorant views.

In Yoga ignorance is explained more scientifically and generally. It is mistaking the impure for the pure, the temporal for the eternal, the painful for the pleasurable.

According to the definition of Yoga we are all wallowing in ignorance. We mistake this impure body, for example, for something pure or to be worshipped for its own sake. We behave as if this body will last forever, when in truth it is temporal. We mistake its pleasures to be the divine pleasures, so we even say when we eat certain food, “this is divine” when in fact it is a pale shadow.

Gosh you clearly don’t enjoy and appreciate anything in life, that is such a shame. Reading your opinions on ‘ignorance’ makes me very happy to be very ignorant!

I am now going to enjoy some ‘divine’ chocolate!

Trust me, I know how to enjoy myself  I also know that the enjoyments in this plane are a trifle before the pleasures of the higher planes. It’s like going to a tribal community which eat crushed catapillars, and introducing them to the joys of chocolate(oompa loompa) The pleasures of the crushed catapillars is but a trifle before the pleasures of chocolate.

There is a very good reason why the sages call samsara dukkha, it is because everything pales to insigificance before the pleasure of god.

There are higher pastures to enjoy than the basic sensory pleasure of chocolate.

I totally agree!

But I still enjoy chocolate…and I plan to hang on to that ignorant view

You cannot achieve moksha whilst you choose to hold on.

If you choose to hold on to the pleasures of the world, you are not striving for non-attachment.

This is fine. I respect your decision. But I think it demonstrates something that many people do not realise: to truly practice yoga, for its intended purpose, requires you to give up all ignorance, including the mistaken thought that chocolate brings pleasure. Including all such avidya.

I think chocolate was created by God to be the final and most difficult test of renunciation

You are judging me from a joke I’ve made about chocolate?! Seriously…??

No. I’m not judging you. I’m responding to the words in your post. Nothing more. My words are not even aimed at you. The forum is open to everyone who has an Internet connection, and my words are constructed for all of those people.

My mistake is that I should not have said “whilst you choose to hang on” etc., I should have said “whilst one chooses to hang on”. This did indeed make it seem like my comments were aimed at you personally, when this was far from my intention. This may have caused offence, and for that I apologise.

When you quote someone’s post you are directing it at them. Did I say the forum is NOT open to everyone…where do you even get that?

Don’t worry I’m not offended, it made me laugh!

I disagree that quoting someone directs the comment at them. That’s not usual interpretation of forum usage.

Quoting is used to provide context. If I was directing a comment at an individual, I would use one of the commonly accepted means such as “@username:”.

Your interpretation of mt comment about the openness of the forum makes me realise how sensitive you are to such comments, and how much such statements can be misinterpreted. I extend my apolgies to cover that statement.

No probs dude, do as you like I really don’t care

An easy way to know if you are ignorant is to see how easy you get angry when other people act in a way that you dont understand or you are not agree. When this is taking place you know for sure that you are not seeing the unity of all life.Since me and you are part of the same creation if I get angry is beacuse Im still separating you and me.the key word here is ilumination.

If you have to ask if your ignorant or not - then your ignorant!
:stuck_out_tongue:

But hey I’m ignorant too!

This is what I heard about chocolate. Take it for what its worth. Chocolate was created by a tribal savage whod given his flesh to a demon. Therfore it is wholly evil.

Just because he is asking does not make him an ignorant .Maybe he is asking to test you.

By the way ignorant about what? we all are ignorant about something.I already gave him the right answer (as long as you keep thinking that your are anything except god you are an ignorant). But you have to be god to in order of saying that. Not just think that you are god.thinking does not make you anything.Being make you something.By the way dont listen to people that are confuse.you may end up confuse as well.

Uh thats nice. See here now the only time I get angry is at anothers foolishness.

Nothing wrong with ignorance.
“As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.” ~ Socates
(it’s not as simple as that, I just like that quote)
