How many times to repeat an asana? And how many days a week?

I know you have to hold the position or pose for 30 seconds. But how many times you have to repeat the asana in one sitting. and how many days a week you should practice yoga asanas.

This is up to you. Sometimes you may want to do an asana several times in one sitting. You could easily do asanas everyday, but I would say do asanas at least three times a week to get a good benefit from them. You could also hold some asanas for longer if you wish. I’ve regularly held some asanas for 10 mins.

Hello Roosh,

The doing is determined by the intention. For example in our work the physical practice is a conduit to do three things; explore, discover, and live one’s svadharma. With such an intention you can see how a specific timing might be problematic.

While I know what you are meaning I often question the phrase “hold” as it seemingly implies that the pose itself is not living, growing, evolving. But for some practitioners the two are not mutually exclusive.

If one is looking to open overly tight hamstrings (for example) that work should be done twice a day, carefully watching for any gross or fine “progress” or the lack thereof - both are fruitful for the student on the path of yoga.

Some poses may be done once, other poses may be repeated. I believe the priority should be on the integrity of the doing (let’s call that quality) rather than the frequency or repetition (quantity). In the contemporary practice we have many students who practice rigorously and often, but sadly achieve only physical result and often an externally oriented one at that. Such things are “ok” but clearly miss the bigger picture, do not particularly help the plight of the planet, and reduce yoga to the equivalent of exercise.
