How often

hello all!
for a newbie, how often should one attend Yoga class, it seems that once a week is not enough…?

There is no quick answer that applies to everyone for your questions of “how often”.

I think the answer for you really depends on your reasons for and goals in practicing yoga, in whatever form you choose. In general, though, I believe you’ll get the most benefits from practicing every day, even if its only for 10 minutes. What’s most important is the focus, dedication and passion you bring to your practice, not how long or how much you do.

As for attending yoga class, once per week is generally sufficient. If you have time for more, great, but it isn’t necessary. The key for you as a beginner is to learn proper technique, and to learn to respect your own current capacity so that you don’t hurt yourself. A good teacher should be able to help you with both. Also, you need time to absorb and practice what you’ve learned in class – too many classes too often can leave you overwhelmed, overworked, and confused.

As a beginner, I would strongly advise you to try several different styles, with different teachers to see what fits you best. Classes should leave you feeling physically and mentally refreshed, energized and relaxed, not tired, sore or disturbed. Sure, there should be a certain amount of challenge that spurs you to grow, but not so much that you injure yourself. In a word, the experience should be enjoyable (not necessarily fun or exciting, however).

Once you find a suitable style/class/teacher, stick with it. Don’t fall into the trap of always trying the next best thing. We each have a path that’s right for us – find yours and stay on it.
