Hyper mobile joints

Thank you Mukunda for your books and this web site. This summer I completed a Yoga Therapy Certification thru the Rocky Mountain Institute for Yoga Therapy and Auyveda. We were introduced to SYT via Char Lee and Geralyn Gendreau. I am very drawn to your work, and will be attending workshops and trainings for sure. I am a certified Integrative Yoga Therapist since 1995 and have been teaching yoga for 13 years and practicing for 30.

Yesterday I saw a young man who is a pitcher on the High School Baseball team. He is experiencing tingling in his right palm. MD’s diagnose irritation of the ulna nerve and don’t know why, no PT was prescribed. His accupunturist suggested yoga. He had been lifting free weights just prior to the onset, and now pitches with his left arm.
The joint freeing exercises showed he is hyper moble in all upper body joints and in the spine with tight hips and hamstrings. In JFE #6 spinal extension he was hanging on his ligements. The thoraxic curve is flat, and lumbar lordosis is exaggerated. The right shoulder is a bit higher than the left and his arches are somewhat flat. In an effort to stay “loose” he often stretches his wrists, elbows, and shoulders beyond normal range of motion. (he now realizes that this is unwise). There was also quite a bit of tightness in the right upper trap. How can I help him connect his shoulder girdle to his core body without stressing his wrists, and stabelize his joints. He is a wonderful young man and wants to be a pro ball player.

Thank you for your time and generosity.
Maria

In general he needs a good assessment by a trained Structural Yoga Therapist. A list of graduates of my course is cited on my website www.yogatherapycenter.org the number will greatly increase in January with over 40 new graduates mostly on the East Coast. Then 30 more in Colorado and throughout the country are due to complete in July, 2006. In the meantime i would recommend doing the JFS as is in my book for strength chapter 18. Optimal for his ulnar nerve pain is an experienced bodyworker with connective tissue massage or rolfing technique. Yoga is not likely to help with that type of challenge as it is too complex as yoga is much more of a general body benefiting process. namaste mukunda
