Improving Strength & Flexibility in the Knees

Hi everyone!

Can someone give me advice on ways to make my knees more flexible? I feel like they are so tight in certain poses, like Heron and Hero.

Any tips?

Thanks!

I’m interested in the same. My knees feel like they’re holding up my yoga.

Hello. It is most common for people in general to refer to the joints as being tight which is only partially accurate. The muscles that surround any given joint are more likely to be the culprits although the actual joint capsule can become stiffened and inpliable. Be sure to address the entire leg because there are so many muscles that come into and around the knee joint both from below and above. Also, when looking into lenghthening muscles for long term change, keep in mind it’s best to stay in a posture for 2 minutes minimum. The quicker the movements in and out of a posture the more likely the muscles and related fascia will tense up again given little gain. Consider also the movement of the pelvis as related to the knees therefore be warey of locking the knees, always maintain a small micro-bend at the knees and when lengthening the hamstrings be sure it’s not all about pressing the knees back in fact they ought to be lengthened but not strained at all. Be patient, use deep slow openers and metaphorically you might like to ask yourself if there is a “next step” in your life you are hesitant to take. Also, stay warm at all times.

Thanks for the info!

Generally when a joint feels tight it is actually the muscles around the joint that need to be lengthen and not the joint its self. With regards to the knees and the postures you mentioned you need to lengthen your Quads, or thigh muscles in order to have more range of motion in your knee joint. This can be done with deep lunges where you bring your heel toward your buttocks on the back leg. Be very careful when doing posture where your knee is bent deeply as you do not want to stretch your ligaments because these do not stretch back and then your joints are at risk.

I’ve been actually doing a lot of quad stretching and I can feel it pulling on my knee when I do it. It feels good!

Thanks for the help and I won’t push myself too far with it.
