Is it true?

when i was younger, i usually hear people say that when you concentrate real hard while doing yoga in a quiet place, you can actually levitate. i just happen to remember that just now. is that true? can it really happen?

I remember reading a book one day. I don’t remember the title but it was talking about yogi’s that levitate and walk on water. It all made sense to me a few chapters later which was about the usage of opium :stuck_out_tongue:

When you were younger? How old are we now?

The answer is no. Not in the way we typically think of levitation as leaving the ground, floating in air, flying. However, there is internal levity caused by the upward thrust and turning of kundalini, driven by gravity and self-control, gained through yoga, and yes, concentration or awareness. Through yoga we defy gravity, but it doesn’t mean you’ll leave the ground.

Don’t ask me if it happens in space. I don’t know. (But actually now that I think of it, I would guess not, since it is produced by gravity, counter to it.)

what happens when you experience internal levity?
is that only achieved when you are an experienced practitioner of yoga?

sprout,

I think it has more to do with luck than yoga, and one’s personal evolution. Yoga definitely helped me understand it, perhaps gave me the strength and control to sustain it a little longer, but it started before I was trained in yoga. It’s not something I was pursuing or even knew was a possiblity, but something that just happened. I cannot do it at will, but it still happens occasionally when I least expect it.

Describing it might only mislead you, but I will try. It’s as if you were to turn a pyramid over and balance it on its point. From the inside, it looks like this. It only “feels” like levitation, but it’s more like suspension. I feel as though I’m being lifted from the base of the skull, and yet also as if I were supporting the weight of the world. There’s a tremendous amount of force involved.

Personally, I think its kundalini, but that’s supposed to be some kind of miracle no one is capable of. Like, I should be living in the clouds now, or something. Like, I would never see another bill in my life. It is heaven and earth coming together. That’s the best I can do.

Best to just put it out of your mind. i don’t think you can “make” it happen, rather it makes you happen. But yoga is a part of the picture.

I’m sure I will get hell for this post, but you asked, and this is just my story.

In an effort to answer all questions as honestly as possible I offer the following:

There are many things we as human beings can do that we are not doing and that might seem to be impossible. Additionally, there are many things that very sincere, dedicated, yogis can do that may seem like tricks.

However, at the end of the day these things are not important. While there are certainly manifestations of “yoga” which intentionally or accidentally emphasize, bring out, or encourage trickery, performance, show offs, hot dogs, and the like, the big picture of yoga is one assisting the evolution of human beings - not their popularity at a party.

its a levitation of consciousness and there is a difference between magic and spirituality

LD,

Can consciousness have a relationship with something else? Is there an up or down, in or out, left and right to consciousness, which is all pervading, all encompassing? “Levity” is in relation to something else: gravity. Yes? It also has a direction.

Nothing to do with consciousness, spirituality, magic or tricks here, it’s purely physical, outside the realm of the mind and understanding, but within that of experience. It’s ha and tha pulling together, gravity assisted, along the sushumna, like a zipper, producing thrust in an inward/upward direction, and although it won’t create separation with the floor, it will all points in between: from the floor to the skull, suspending them.

It’s just dumb luck and nothing more. It has no meaning.

…but then again, it did not come without tremendous sacrifice, unceasing dedication, hard work and an unwavering love of yoga.

thank you very much Siva and InnerAthlete for your responses.

i’m sorry if i sounded like a little child who keeps on asking questions (sorry if they sound like dumb ones too). it’s just that i am not very knowledgeable in yoga and am still trying to learn.

@ Siva
it was very nice to know about how you felt when you experienced internal levity. upon reading your response, i felt like it was a good experience.
