There are no “external rituals” in Tantra. And whatever appears to be external is just a triggering mechanism for an inner process. Otherwise, if it is just a matter of what one sees from the outside, then the whole science of yoga becomes irrelevant. What is the purpose of all these thousands of asanas ? What is the purpose of mudras, these absurd hand gestures, these strange sounds and mantras, these strange diagrams which do not appear to have any meaning, and just sitting in one posture doing nothing - idling time away when the whole world is available ?
But there is a particular and scientific function for each of these, if you are only seeing the outer shell, you have missed everything because all of the things which are capable of awakening a transformation in man are happening beneath the surface, hidden from one’s vision.
Eating from the cap of a skull, again, belongs to a particular approach called aghora yoga, it is not something most tantrics practice - although there is nothing wrong with the practice itself. For the aghori, this along with several other methods are a way to move beyond the fear of death, a constant reminder of the impermanence of existence.
Neither is there ritual group sex in Tantra. The use of sexual intercourse as a method for awakening Kundalini takes place between man and woman, and it is not simply sex for the sake of sex. On the contrary, the yogi has to demonstrate tremendous freedom from the senses before he becomes initiated into such processes. The whole purpose of using sex is simply that their subtle bodies are polarized differently, they contain subtle energies which are complimentary to one another. If one becomes aware of methods as to how to channel these energies and force them along the sushumna in the spinal cord, then sex becomes more than just sex, it is a strategy towards liberation of consciousness.

The initiation may be from a male or a female guru, it does not matter. But those who are practicing the method certainly must have already done some preperatory training, because the processes that are involved in the sexual intercourse require a knowledge of specific techniques, as well as a proper inner atmosphere which is suitable for practicing them. As far as intercourse is concerned, the man will have to come to a certain level of mastery with vajroli, the woman will have to come to a certain level of mastery with sahajoli. In either case, one must have already come to a certain state of awareness which is such, that one can engage in stimulation of the senses and yet remain absolutely centered, mindful, and balanced. Otherwise, one is bound to become entangled in the experience, one is bound to become lost in intoxication. And as far as “initiation” is concerned, such nonsense is not needed either. Anybody who does the work necessary to prepare one’s system and is equipped with a knowledge of the techniques is capable of using sex as a method for the expansion of consciousness.
