Is Yoga Hinduism?

Everyone WANTS to be happy, but I don’t believe true happiness can be attained here on earth in these corruptible bodies.

We will only know true and complete happiness when we are united with God and enjoying the Beatific Vision.

Until then, there will be suffering, but it’s not wrong to seek out happiness by legitimate means, and enjoy those moments and times of happiness that we are given.

The goal of this earthly life is to find salvation so that we may be happy with God forever in the “next” life. Until then, happy times come and go, and they are only foreshadows of the ultimate happiness to come.

Yep, you just confirmed what I said. That Christianity teaches self-fulfillment and happiness cannot be gotten in this life. Hinduism is the only religion that teaches self-fulfilment and happiness can be gotten in this life through the body. And thus Yoga makes complete sense within a Hindu framework.

It does not make sense for a Christian to do Yoga when they do not believe happiness can be gotten from the body. And yet you are Christian and you are doing Yoga. You are doing it because Yoga actually does have the power to improve the quality of your life and make you happier, healthier and more harmonious. Why are Christians fighting with their Churches who are trying to outlaw Yoga? Because they know it works and makes them feel better.

Christianity does not teach that one can use their body as a tool to reach the divine. Rather it teaches the absolute opposite. It teaches only faith in Jesus can take you to the divine and living a life as the Church dictates(i.e., not sinning) Nowhere in the entirety of the bible does it say keep yourself happy and healthy for now by doing exercise. Like I said by giving the body any kind of importance at all you would have been viewed as a heretic in the past.

You may know Hinduism, but you don’t know Christianity.

Your knowledge is superficial, and you have fallen into an either/or mentality regarding Christianity.

Sometimes one must suffer and be out in cold storms, but it is prudent to come in out of the rain when possible.

But I can’t say I do yoga. It would be unfair and disrespectful to those who in good faith do yoga to say that I who have robbed yoga of the asanas and purposely neglect to do the rest, practice “yoga.”

You are arguing Christianity as if you are a sola scriptura Protestant. The Catholic faith is not based on the Bible. The Bible is only part of the faith and came from within the Church. And when something is not in the Bible, it doesn’t follow that we cannot do it. Nowhere in the Bible does it say we may play basketball as recreation, but I can say with certainty that it is not a sin to do so and is not heretical.

The body is important and it is wrong to harm another body or my own body. It is good to take care of it. We are to be good stewards of all that we are given. The Apostle Paul admonishes Christians to drink a little wine for the sake of their health.

You make assertions based on your own prejudices and opinions, but have no facts to back them up.

It is obvious through the 17 pages of posts that there are many opinions on this subject. Each side has posted their well researched arguments and still there is no resolution. No one will change their beliefs or their side.

So I hereby call this a draw!

SD, you and those who support your claim can have it and believe yoga belongs to Hinduism. Thomas, you and all the others (including myself) can go ahead and practice yoga as you see fit. If it feels good, do it. Think of it as a gift given to all to enjoy without attachment. Just enjoy it!

Lotusgirl has a tornado developing in her back yard and here she is sorting this one out!!!
Now go get those pictures storm trooper Lori

Wannabee Kareng…shew shew

You realize, Kareng, that no one knows what we are talking about! We’ve lost our minds!

One should never argue politics…religion…and apparently yoga

Just in case you are all wondering what Kareng and I are talking about, we have a tornado watch with a severe thunderstorm warning, so the sirens are going. They do this because conditions are right for a tornado to form out of the severe thunderstorm. Now I’m off to the basement for cover. Hopefully, I’ll be back!

To both of you - keep safe and stop posting.

To repeat what I said

One should never argue politics…religion…and apparently yoga… and that goes double if you are under the threat of a tornado

I just saw some film, i.e real, of a tornado on the box, stuff flying everywhere.

Roger that Yulaw! I have a Mac laptop. It goes anywhere. Adrenaline is up as we are just waiting for the bad weather to hit. I’ll be safe!

Danger over. There was a tornado that was spotted about 35 miles east of us. All we got was a lot of rain, which we needed! Sorry Kareng, no good tornado pictures.

It’s amazing the things you think to bring to the basement…my yoga mat!

My apologies for kidnapping this thread! Spotter LotusGirl out!

Well ,that’s a relief!

Still, you know how these twisters work. It might back-track, meander a lititle and creep up behind you.Keep your eyes peeeld and the broadcast channels open and then bolt up the hatches.

You can always head back down if trouble brews again.

I’m picturing an ABC news presenter in front of your house.lol

Are tornados not uncommon near where you live?

Tornadoes are quite common in our area. We had a very large and very destructive one back in 1974 that leveled whole areas. 3 people died. I was 16 at the time and we all stood on my mothers porch and watched it. It was awesome. We ran inside when we realized it was heading straight for us! We did have some damage with that one. It was considered the biggest outbreak ever in the US. On a scale of 1-5 on the Fugita scale it was a 5. I’ll never forget it! And now I’m a spotter for the National Weather Service because of that.

I did get interviewed a few years back by The Weather Channel when we had this horrible storm with very large hail! Not quite ABC, but…!
