Is Yoga Safe For Babies & Small Children?

Doctors say yoga, like any movement, can be beneficial for babies ! Is Yoga Safe For Babies & Small Children?

Hi Chris,

If one is following the advice of a medical doctor then that feedback is relevant. Since I am not, I don’t give much credence to an M.D. who likely has no Yoga experience whatsoever providing guidance in the what’s, whys, and wherefores.

Yoga is safe for all beings. However asana, the physical practice that is but a sliver of Yoga, has some additional boundaries. Safety has to be something the teacher is aware of, monitoring, and incorporating into her/his teaching - or something the student has learned, is monitoring, and incorporating into their practice.

Anyone can sustain injury doing anything at all. Asana requires that the doing manage the continuum between safety and effect. As stated, that is the task of the teacher until such a time as it can be taken up by the student.

In the Iyengar tradition it is said that before the age of seven the practice of asana should be playful but at age 7 the principles of alignment are introduced. If the teacher is well trained an asana class for youngsters can be very beneficial. When the prerequisite is not met (qualified teacher) then anyone in the vicinity can be damaged, regardless of their age

:)) there is not such a thing as yoga for babies, cause yoga is a process of self realization, ( is self realization safe?)) and one of a billion kids are able to do that. In turn, YOGA ASANA which is yoga pose is very fun for children. I remember myself standing on my heal and shoulders ( we called it a birch tree) …OF course kids will get bored id you will try to explain them the correct alignment, therapeutic purpose of the pose , and expect them to hold it for 2 minutes :)) but they do not mind to shout MEOW in a cat pose and grow the branches like a tree in a tree pose or snore like Darth Vader as doing ujai breath… so for kids yoga poses is just a fun time and no different from any other activity and is as safe/unsafe as any other activity

i am agree with you cause yoga is a process of self realization. but few pose beneficial for babies to development.

beneficial but not nessesary… and to answer your question - safe or unsafe just like any other activity. Just i know that certain pranayamas (khumbakas, bhastrika, ect) are not safe for kids under 12-14 yo

Special techniques like Omkar, Yoganidra can increase the concentration of mind and memory. Also the techniques like Surya Namaskara increase the physical fitness of the child. And these techniques child can learn easily.

Yes , Yoga is safe and helpful for small children. Children who have regular yoga practice tell teachers and parents that they are able to concentrate better during the day, focus better on their activities, and pay attention to their tasks

yes . it is safe to practice yoga near babies & small children..... jus for god sakes... be careful  haha
