Kapalabati and sensitive teeth

Because of a teenage over-indulgence in OJ I believe I wore my tooth enamel down. I have managed it well with sensodyne for many years. ( I’m 56 )Three weeks ago I started some pranayama, with kapalabati as the longest session of 10 minutes ( it felt right, and later I found that lo and behold Ram Dev says that’s the right time on his video ). I build up a mouthful of saliva and unless it’s really bothersome I ignore it and get into my rhythm. My tooth sensitivity has become a constant low grade total teeth area pain, non stop , though much worse with heat and cold foods and liquids. I post this for your consideration and to see if anyone else has ever heard of this. To put it simply : I think my saliva is eating away at my already thin tooth enamel. I will from now on swallow more often and try to keep my tongue further back and on the palate. Also, I leave here to google. Thanks for replies.

Normally saliva fights tooth decay but in one case( from googling) :An acid condition of the saliva can also cause tooth decay. Increased acidity causes calcium to become more soluble. The dissolved calcium then washes away and is lost through the urine.

What causes the saliva’s alkalinity to drop and acidity to increase? The effect usually comes from ingesting too much of certain substances that produce an acid reaction in the body including sugar, flour, bread, legumes, grains, and meat. When these foods are included in the diet, they should be balanced with alkalinizing foods, particularly vegetables and seaweed products.
I am a vegetarian and though I eat my share of grains etc. I doubt that my saliva is acid.

I think I have my answer- it’s the constant blowing of air from the mouth I do in other pranayama. I’ll stop any with mouth exhalations. I googled pranayama and sensitive teeth and found several sites saying the above.

Hi Tony,

I get hemorrhoids every time i practice kapalabati.
Solution: I’ve never more practiced it.

Have a look to your prakruti (dosha constitution, ayurveda). Kapalabati and pitta guys are not a good marriage.

Good luck!

I know from personal experience that aswini mudra and general abdominal-pelvic area lifting in all asana, eg. tadasana etc. is very effective at hemmoroidal relief. It makes sense that drawing up and in reverses pushing down and out , which is generally what causes hemmoroids

Inversions also are good.
