Knock Knee and Age?

I am 15 years old with a knock knees and a Q angle of 21 degrees.

I am currently doing a large amount of Warrior Pose II , Tree Pose , Head to Knee pose and triangle pose. (Structual Yoga)

I have a two questions.

  1. Considering I am still growing, and apparently have alot to grow coming from an orthodontist, does this mean the more I do the quicker I will recover? Im currently in a growth spurt kinda thing. Will my knees straighten quicker than someone at 20?

  2. I dont feel a inner thigh stretch when I do tree pose! Can someone help? I know there really tight.

Orthodontist? or Orthopedist? The bone guy or the tooth guy? I think you mean the bone guy right?

Do you have a teacher? Since you are knock kneed you may require some supervision in the poses you describe to align your knee and foot correctly.

Nothing is going to hurry along nature. Your legs will straighten or not in their own time. In the meantime, how lovely that you have begun yoga so young. Welcome!

My orthodontist told me I had alot to grow!

Im curenntly taking part in physiotherapy.

Im really determined but I have another question  boy im full of em’

Will all this excerise actually work?! Will it actually straighten my knees?

Hey, BenPen. Welcome to the forums.
There was an earlier thread on having knock knees – take a peek:

Thank you techne but is their anybody on this forum that can answer my questions?

BenPen, if you take a look at that link Techne has provided it leads you to a thread and other links by Mukunda who has a great deal of knowledge. Take a look, keep clicking on the links provided and keep searching.

I did some reading about this after your question here. You must persevere with your poses, and hopefully have a good teacher to correct any misalignments to be successful. It takes much time and will not happen overnight or even in a week or so. Change will be very gradual and you must be persistent and consistent. Good luck.

Hello BenPen,

  1. My common sense says that your age will work to your advantage. You will need determination to change things. However, in 2 months of consistent practice you should be able to alleviate any discomfort associated with knock knees (e.g. lower back pain). Consistent practice means practicing at least 3 -4 times per week. Changing the shape may take 2 years. But there are no guarantees.

  2. If you don’t feel the stretch in tree pose, there are more efficient poses for stretching your adductors, like triangle (utthita trikonasana), wide leg forward bend (prasarita padottanasana), and bound angle pose (baddha konasana). Don’t forget to strengthen the hip abductors! My favorite exercise for this is lifting a straight upper leg while lying on my side. Do repetitions (6 - 12 reps) and holding (12 breaths).

  3. No one really knows whether the alignment of your upper leg will change. Mukunda Stiles writes that he changed his knock knees, but he also says that he practiced 6-8 hours a day under supervision of experienced teachers. I guess the result will depend on your determination and dedication to your practice. You can measure your progress as time goes by. Measure the distance between your ankles while standing with your knees touching. Watch this distance become smaller as time passes.

I hope that you are not just practicing from the Structural Yoga Therapy book. It is helpful to have a yoga teacher to guide you, especially if you are embarking on a long project. A yoga therapist would be even better. It is essential to know if your priority should be stretching the adductors or strengthening the abductors, or both! And you need to do the poses with correct alignment to be effective: You need to feel the adductors stretching and your abductors toning. At the very least discuss what you are doing with your physiotherapist, just to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, besides my ailments im quite intrested in yoga and think its a fantastic way of staying fit.

yeah it sounds intresting

You have to use a teacher, look at your feet you should feel both sides of your feet. so both sides of your legs muscle will work equally
