Kriya Yoga vs Siddha Yoga vs Mahayoga

Namaste,

I have a question for anyone familiar with this topic.
What are the main differences between the following three lineages/traditions?:

  1. Kriya Yoga (ex. Babaji/Yogananda)
  2. Siddha Yoga (ex. Nityananda/Muktananda)
  3. Mahayoga (ex. Tirth lineage)

They seem to be essentially the same, only with focus in different places.

  • For Kriya Yoga, sadhana/effort seems to be the central focus - a complex system of mudras, bandhas, mantras, kriyas, hatha, etc
  • For Siddha Yoga, it seems to be a mixture of sadhana and spontaneous kundalini unfolding.
  • And for Mahayoga, it seems the emphasis is on surrender and Grace manages the unfolding process entirely as per the aspirant’s inner needs.

Agree/disagree - things to add - comments - questions - all is welcome.

And given that they are all based on direct transmission from a competent living (physical) Guru, I would say they are in steep decline these days. There don’t even seem to be many sketchy Gurus around that are directly linked to these traditions. Let alone solid Gurus. Perhaps this is what was meant by Kali Yuga.
