Lack of power in the morning

Hello all morning yoga people.
I usually do yoga directly after work, - around 4-5 in the afternoon.
But I have had to swap one of my afternoon lessons for a morning one.
I can see how it’s not a hard session
and how doable it would be in the afternoon
still i find it rather difficult, and afterwards i feel drained.

Does this change over time?
Or is there something I should eat or drink to be more up for the morning lessons?

Will appreciate any advice.

For as long as I can remember I have had to have a light snack in the mornings before doing any type of physical activity. I do good with a protien shake and water about an hour and a half before yoga or meditation. I hope it gets better for you.

Almost impossible to reply to such a question without first knowing what practice means to you. Is it a viniyoga practice of 2 hours at 7am for a person of 25 years who has a strong fitness background? Or is it a heated practice of 90 minutes, filled top to bottom with vinyasa, for a sedentary 60 year-old?

In this case it’s a not very well trained 30-year old who has been doing different sorts of yoga for about six years.

And it is a pretty basic one hour astanga-like yoga lesson at the local gym.

It’s not limited to yoga. When I went to the gym, running on treadmills and so on, that too felt more like instant exhaustion than a good workout, and morning yoga classes also made me feel tired (the bad kind).

Right now I have the choice between morning or dropping a third of my practice, and I don’t want to drop it. I don’t like to accept that “this is just how I am”, so I am looking for ways to make the bad feeling go away.

As for morning routines: I typically eat one slice of bread, drink about a pint of water and a cup of coffee, about half an hour before going to class.

Some people is morning people and some evening which means they function better after lunch. If i do asana 7 o clock i must sleep 2 hours at lunchtime otherwise i feel drained.

Of course one can do half of the program and dont feel drained but energized.

Also pranayama is recommended after asana to recover prana 1/4th the time of asanas. So 1 hour asana means 15 minutes of pranayama. Maybe doing 30 min of asana and then pranayama will help you.

Thank you for that suggestion.
I’ll try that tomorrow.

It sounds to me like you’re simply not getting enough breath in. Have you paid attention to your breathing? Are you able to slow it down and deepen it consistently throughout your practice. This would make a very big difference in your energy level.

Another nice practice to begin with, if you have low energy when you wake up, is the Abdominal Breath, or if you have worked up to it, the 3-part breath. Another step up would be Kapalabhati (The Skull Cleanser), which I find particularly effective for clearing out blocked energy. You can find instructional videos on all of them here:

Please bear in mind that it is very important that you do them properly. If you can, get a trusted teacher to have a look at your breathing before you commit it to a regular practice.

Take care,

David

agree with all of the above…also might try a coll shower - very energizing! also, some people just have a different day cycle… some are morning and some are night people…sometimes it’s changing though…
