Liver flush/cleanse

Has any one experience to share of liver flush , I have been preparing my body for two weeks and am going to do flush tonight so am interested in peoples thoughts or experiences.

om shanti

I liked the idea of a cleanse in general and have done a couple in the past. I don’t do them as much, cause I looked into them and found out there was minimal science to back up the effectiveness. The only kind of cleans I do now is like a fast where I drink liters and liters of water and alkalizing green drink. I don’t think there is much science to back up this type of thing either, but I just like feeling emptier now and then  it makes me happy, so I don’t care if it actually does anything or not lol

CD: Hello! I hope you are well. There are a few threads on the forum where Fin and Pandara address your same questions about a liver cleanse that they have personal experience with. Those threads are here: Liver Flush Tea and Arise and Shine Cleanse.

YA: Water is a cleanser and hydrater, which you already know because you are using it as both. And I am with you on this point: experience of what works and doesn’t for my body is enough for me.

After studying and working as an undergrad in the physiology labs at my university, I came to learn that what most people consider as “science” is just simple data gathering; data that is then used to compare against theories and hypothesis. And from what you have shared here, and in other threads, it sounds like you are doing this same careful data gathering in your own life and practice. Sure your sample size is one, but adapting for yourself as an individual is the harder work and following what is prescribed for the masses is the lesser work.

Cheers to you both,
Nichole
(Sorry, my son needed me and I ran out of editing time while tending to him.) Sure, your sample size is just one, but that one is YOU. It has been my experience, both professionally and personally, that adapting for yourself as an individual is the greater work in life, while following what is prescribed for the masses is only useful if you don’t know yourself, or are trying to avoid knowing yourself.

There is a very interesting article on the 6 cleansing practices which were originally part of Hatha yoga… before they were ‘conveniently overlooked’ by most modern day western schools.

http://www.seraph.ie/Shatkarma%20v2_0.htm

Nowadays you can find them taught by well experienced Satyananda or Sivananda yoga teachers when they feel the students are ready for them.

There is also another practice taught by the Satyananda yoga school which involves flushing out of the stomach, intestines and bowels known as Shanprakshalana. I have practiced this a number of times and it is an excellent way of flushing out thew whole system. However it also flushes out one’s useful organisms in ones intestines, so one needs to follow a very strict diet for about 10 days after the cleansing. One should also not practice it more than once every 6 months.

I am adding this purely as a pointer to practices out there within the yoga tradition for cleansing the body.

These are not meant as instructional guides, and these practices should be learned directly from an experienced yoga teacher and practiced (at least at the start) under supervision.

Best Wishes,
Dave

Thanks Dave ,
I am aware of the shatkarmas and practise the last three , but have never been instructed in the first three ,although I surf so feel like I do jala neti loads ,but as some one pointed out the salt consistency is different. Interestingly I seem to remember B K S Iyengar saying that they were not overly necessary if you have a regular and dynamic practise , I think im right in that , would not like to misquote BKS.
Its the morning after and have passed many stones and feel great still not quite finished ,looking forward to eating , a big plate of chips ,err maybe not.

Hi Charlie,
Funnily enough the salt consistency of the sea is not too much different to that within the body… ok a little more salt… so by osmosis it will draw some water from the body… but in my unqualified opinion as i am not 100% sure of the comparisons of salt consistencies, i would guess that regular surfing more than once or twice a week… and plenty of falling in  would do a lot of similar cleansing.

I am not sure where you heard the quote from Mr Iyengar, but the quote is not quite correct.

We all have different diets and different reactions to our diets and metabolisms… as well as the factors of our physical practice, and we all different amount of mucous in our bodies.

If you have been practicing strong physical asana for many years and have been ‘listening’ to the messages given back from your body then the chances are that your diet will now be pretty satvic and so you will be unlikely to have an excessive of mucous in your body. Within this context the quote is correct.

However, if one does not have a satvic diet, or some other health condition or allergy and one has a lot of mucous, then irregardless of physical practice, one will gain a lot of benefit from Jala Neti.

And i also have not practiced the first 2 shatkarmas

Good luck with your cleanse… and i wish you well with your ongoing ‘looking after the body’ by what you are putting into it, as well as what you are doing with it

I personally think surfing is great for the body and the mind, and can be a great practice to bring one into the present.

Best Wishes,
Dave

What method did you choose Charlie…did you use epsom salts?

Another way is to drink pure apple juice and then lemon on a regular basis…the apple to soften the stones and the lemon juice to reduce their size…

And as everyone has said…WATER…
I was shocked at the difference plenty of water makes…a mild detox is 4oz of water every hour…I chose this recently and kept it up for 4 days…I feel a new person on plenty of water.

2 weeks of basic vegan diet , no oils ,caffeine ,alcohol .
2 pints of apple juice everyday
last day lots of epsom salts /grapefruit juice
cup olive oil/grapefruit juice
sleep
more epsom salts
then you rock !
Im going to do one a month until no more stones , feeling good now.
Ive been taking milk thistle too.
youre right about taking enough water on board.

I take Milk Thistle too…and a whole load of other things…glugggg every day, down the hatch…gone…
2 pints of apple juice.yum x

would nor recommend drinking that much apple juice normally , very acidic , but as you say it softens the stones

Cripes, I’ve been thinking its alkaline??.derr…I saw it listed in a PH chart along with lemon juice as alkaline so I’ve been drinking it…too much maybe!!

Regarding acidity . Im not 100% sure double check maybe they are mildly acidic .I did check on internet and one site said they were alkaline forming , but others say acidic .
