Loose joints, ?nukking? noise.?

Hi all,

Recently my joints seem to have got looser, such that when I move they make a ?nukking? noise. It?s not dislocation and there is no pain, but it is disconcerting.

I?m 44 years old. I?ve practiced yoga on and off for about six years. I?ve done bikram, ashtanga, and various vinyasa styles. I?ve recently started to practice on my own in the mornings, but I stick to the good principles I have been taught and am not doing anything in my practice that Mr Iyengar would disapprove of. I do about three led classes a week. In total, I probably practice for about an hour and a half a day, five days of the week.

I am generally healthy, without any history of joint problems (though I did have a medial meniscus knee issue a while ago, which is no longer a problem).

Is it age? The change in the nature of practice from classes to self-taught? I wonder if anyone has experienced anything similar?

Where are you sensing the ‘nukking’? I presume this is a kind of clicking noise.
Blessings

Hi of Light,

it’s in the shoulder, knees (when i straighten my leg), elbows and it feels like across the shoulders, under the shoulder-blades.

Hello Attilla,

With so little information, this is a difficult question to address. Directions you might search in: applying more oil - both inside and out. Meaning: use some flaxseed oil with breakfast and apply warm sesame oil massage (abhyanga) for the whole body. Or closely examine your yoga practices - is is possible that you are paying too much attention to stretch at the detriment of strength and stamina?

Even with six years of practice it is still useful to see a teacher one in a while. You could see a teacher individually to help devise a program. Teachers that work therapeutically in London are Robin Monro (Biomedical Trust), Uma Dinsmore Tuli, Madeleine Heinemann, to name just a few whom I know of. Or find a senior teacher in the style of yoga that you are most drawn to.

Willem,

that is very useful advice and i do appreciate it’s a difficult thing to give advise on online. Vis flexibility/strength, as much of my practice is vinyasa, quite energetic, i suspect the balance is correct.

However, I shall pop out and get some flaxseed oil for my porridge. And there is a senior teacher whose teaching i am drawn to who would be a good person to speak to.

Your advice is much appreciated, thanks again.
