Low student numbers

Low student numbers is obviously a common problem for teachers. My regular teacher recently said she is stopping classes until further notice, as student numbers were very low. Yoga to me is about firming of mind and body, and whilst this may seem odd or infantile, I’ll miss the classes since she was a good teacher in a lot of respects. She is doing private classes, however I cannot afford them that much. And I have been to other classes, but then they’re too spiritually-inclined/preachy.

My question though is if this is common, in that a teacher would stop classes due to lower numbers. She may be getting married soon, and I suspect this is a factor.

The popularity of yoga is growing world-wide especially with women. People these days just prefer the convenience and low cost of online classes over that of traditional classes. So you see a decrease in people in yoga studios and an increase of people taking online classes.

It’s kind of fascinating this question. Typically the teacher who only offers asana not only competes with every physical practice under the sun but also eventually burns out, not only themselves but their students.

For that reason, the teachers who really bring the entire practice, teach from a robust understanding, offer more than the physical while still offering the physical, those teachers are usually long-standing in their teaching and beloved by the students.

There are many reasons class numbers can dwindle - one of which is the availability of online classes, hollow though they may be.Why this particular teacher is opting to make this change only she/he knows.

It can be “common” to stop teaching when the revenue from it makes sustainability difficult to attain.

Thanks both of you. It’s possible she’s become a bit burnout, since she used to teach at a local college, but this stopped due to some payment issues. Either way, of course it’s her choice, but I liked her teaching style, and it’s not too spiritual since I in honesty don’t care for that side of the practice. Thanks again.

Depends on the situation. If rent of the rented place is higher than earning , you have to take this step.

She may be getting married soon, and I suspect this is a factor.

It could be personal reason too to stop teaching.

I would suggest practice at home, what you have learned in her class.

thanks.

well she is resuming classes again, so it’s possible she has new clients. as said, i enjoy yoga and prefer it in class format, and she’s a good teacher and didn’t want to find another one.
