Maharsi Vasistha: What causes more suffering?

“Neither disease, poison, adversity or anything else in this world, causes more suffering to man, than stupidity engendered in his body.”

Maharsi Vasistha in text Yoga Vasistha

Nichole

Very well said. Stupidity is the main cause of human suffering. And human stupidity is infinite(Einstein)

I am surprised Vashista of our Puranas is mentioned in a Yoga text.

Well said, btw. But I have a feeling that stupidity is meant as ignorance in this context…

Neitzsche, the Yoga Vasistha is a classical text of Vedanta. It is massive and it is attributed to sage Vasistha and is presented as a dialogue between Vasistha and Lord Rama. It is believed that the text is not really by Vasistha, but rather has just been attributed to him. It presents some very interesting concepts like parallel universes and time travel, the majority of it is told in the form of stories narrated to Lord Rama by Vasistha. In the Yoga Vasistha Lord Rama is just a 16 year old boy who is disenchanted with the suffering in the world and the world and seeks answers to the ultimate questions(a typical spiritual seeker) It is most likely inspired by Buddha’s story, hence why most scholars date the text post-Buddha.
