Matsyasana

When doing Matsyasana, a variation is lifting the legs; what does that do? I have a herniated disk in the Lumbar area and I don’t know if this variation is good for me to do.

Hello Tony.

You’re referencing this pose?
I’ll word this carefully in the hopes it will be read in the same fashion.

For most students with a lumbar herniation this pose would not be therapeutic or “healing” for that particular issue. Add to that the lifting of the legs and one increases the torque or load on the sacrum and lumbar spine.

Yes , that’s the pose. That’s the answer I was looking for, Thank You. I felt like the leg lift was going against my better ways. Unfortunately, I get such benefit in the upper back and neck as a counter pose to shoulder stand that I’ll probably continue it w/o the leg lift. When I hurt I won’t do it at all. I appreciate the help. Namaste
