Meditation different from Self-hypnosis:

Namaste!

Self-hypnosis, like meditation, involves at least an initial period of concentration on an object. However in hypnosis one does not try to maintain an awareness of the here-and-now, or to stay conscious of the process. Instead one essentially enters a sort of semi-conscious trance.

In order to use self hypnosis a state of deep relaxation needs to be attained. Without it the entire process fails. To achieve the correct level of relaxation, it is best to be alone with little chance of being disturbed. The process has been shown to work most effectively in the morning before commencing your everyday activities, or in the evening prior to going to bed. The evening is good but if you are tired you may find it difficult to get sufficiently relaxed without falling asleep. This is by far the most important DO in the list.

It is important to remember, though, that before practicing self hypnosis you have to learn this form of treatment from a qualified professional. This can either be done online or through local hypnosis schools.

“Self-hypnosis, like meditation, involves at least an initial period of concentration on an object.”

There is some focus that is involved, such as for example, simply being receptive to the voice of the hypnotist, or watching a pendulum swing. But it has very little to do with yogic concentration.

“However in hypnosis one does not try to maintain an awareness of the here-and-now, or to stay conscious of the process.”

That is why it has very little to do with meditation.

“essentially enters a sort of semi-conscious trance.”

Hypnosis is basically a kind of sleep. That is the very meaning of the word - it comes from the word hypnos, which means sleep. Rather than leading you towards more and more wakefulness, it simply brings you into a certain state of passivity where you can become more vulnerable to absorbing suggestions in your unconscious.
