Mother Teresa's 100th Birthday Tribute Today

One of my favourite people was and still is Mother Teresa. She would have been 100 years old today! I admire her so much for her wonderful work and the beautiful example she has set and which her Charity still set.

Mother Teresa was known as the ‘Saint of the Gutter’ for her extraordinary love and dedication to poor, homeless and diseased people. To commemorate her 100th birthday, a special mass was held in Kolkata.

I have lit an candle for her tonight and I would like to share a few of my most cherish quotes by Mother Teresa:

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

and

“Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness.”

and

“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.”

Pandara, thank you for sharing this with us.

When we were in Kolkata in 2008, my husband and I attended mass in her abbey’s chapel; it is a simple, modest chapel that also keeps her mortal remains in a marble tomb near the altar. The entire abbey where she lived was small and simple, though filled with plants in the central courtyard and energy that feels really good to be settled in.

Her personal room was small and spartan. And there is a separate space kept as a museum that hosts a beautiful display of her personal things, like her eating bowl, sandals and her daily bible. There were also photos from throughout her life, both as young girl in Albania and her time in her former convent before she came to India.

Pages from her diary were also shared, and for the first time, I had a glimpse at the woman behind the famous image and name. Being her diary, she spoke openly of her struggles with the church, with her faith and with all the love that she felt for those in need. She spoke of being called to selfless service in Kolkata through her prayers and requested intercessions. She also spoke to her fears of the tremendous need that she saw on the streets of Kolkata, and how in her prayers, she was given this insight: “We can do no great things; only small things with great love.” What a gift for the rest of us too, yes?

Thank you for starting this thread of tribute and remembrance.

>> Dear Nichole,

I am going to india in 2011 and plan is to visit her abbey, looking forward to as I think Mother Teresa was a prime example of being a karma yogi. Love the quote that you shared at the end, it summarises the essence of her work for me.

>> Dear Omamana,

Thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyd it.
