Mountain pose

Hi all. I am brand new to yoga and just wanted some clarification on the mountain pose. Should u clench ur buttock muscles?? I struggle to find neutral hip position as my posture is terrible.

I have had various problems with my knees and hip caused by poor posture and trying drastically to rectify this so I can continue to play sport. I just hope yoga is the answer!!

Any info u all have would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

No, do not clench.

Try the posture with your back at the wall, heels, buttocks, back, shoulder blades and back of head touch the wall.

Ask your teacher to look at you from the side and the front to help guide you into the correct position.

And practice, practice, practice…if you have had bad posture fora long time it will not go away instantly…try standing in Tadasana (mountain) EVERY time you are standing not only in yoga class…when standing in ques, standing at a counter/desk/bar/ATM, waiting for a bus etc.

Also when sitting…sit up so the upper body is still doing Tadasana.

Yoga if done/taught correctly will improve your posture…so stick with it…and good luck.

The only reason for a student to contract the gluteus medius, maximus, and minimus in tasasana would be if that student had internally rotated thigh bones. For the “other” students the muscles of the buttocks should be releasing and the sacrum should be heavy and dropping.

Bear in mind however that “we” reserve the right to give specific instructions to specific students in specific poses at specific time. Should and shouldn’t, right, and wrong, don’t often exist.
