Namaste! ohm-shanti Newbie needing yogi advice :)

Namaste my fellow yogis!!

My name is Asha - Spirit of hope  and im brand new here.

Basically I have joined as I want to really get into yoga. I tried it a few times in India and Nepal and really want to bring it into my everyday life for several reasons. I’m deeply spiritual but also believe in enjoying our time in the physical world whilst we are here. I need some motivation and advice from you guys to really help me kick start this life change!

I’ve never been overly athletic, im not overweight or anywhere near it but i have pudge and no definition at all. I’ve always wanted to be motivated to really choose an enjoyable physical hobby / lifestyle and stick at it. I know yoga is the one for me! It calls to me!! The thought of linking the mind-body-soul together in a physical workout sounds so ideal to me. Can you recommend where I should start, what type of yoga, etc? I’m getting married in 2 and a half months and would really like the body changes to be noticable by then. As I said I really want to make this a lifestyle but I really want to have a beautiful flexible healthy body too.

Please feel free to advise me my fellow yogis! I am merely your apprentice!

Namaste xxxxx

Welcome to the forum. I am fairly new here as well and also experience “the pudge”, despite daily practice! Good luck in your explorations.

Welcome to the forums

Are there yoga studios in your area that you’ve begun to explore? That would probably be the first place to start. Go to as many different ones as you want and choose the teacher(s)/location(s) that call to you the most.

Hey guys thanks for the welcome!!

David my problem is im an adventure tour guide and i move to different locations literally everyday. My life is on the road. I drive my little group of passengers to diff locations everyday across the country so a local studio / teach is out of the question unfortunately. I probably should have stated that to begin with. I guess i will be a dvd / youtube yogi lol any good recommendations??

For online videos and asana instructions, I really like Yoga Journal and Planet Yoga. Both are pretty decent warehouses of info and are both free. I would recommend taking a few classes once in awhile however to make sure you are on track, even if they have to be drop-in classes at a new studio every time! When you know what city you’re going to next, do a google search and read some reviews, find a studio to attend during your off-time. I personally feel like my home practice would get lazy if I didn’t also practice in a studio regularly. Also maybe look around the threads here for some reading suggestions to address the other components of yoga other than just asana practice.

In looking to do yoga, what aspects in particular are you looking to do? Many people come for the more physical part, asanas/exercises and what not, while some prefer the 8 limb approach which includes asanas, concentration, meditation, breathng, etc…

as far as your body, one thing I would suggest to most women is to look into their body type/structure. In medical terms you have endo, ecto, and mesomorphs, in ayurvedic terms you have vatta, pitta, kapha, and in simple terms you have naturally skinny people, medium people, and larger people. The reason I bring this up is because I have had friends who were not happy with their shape and they wanted to be skinnier then their bodies would naturally allow. In turn they did not look to fit their bodies disposition, where as when they were a little heavier they actually looked more healthy, and to me more attractive.

being near your ideal weight, of course adding exercise/asanas, and looking at what you eat would probably be of benefit to most people.

Peace be with you
