In the last few weeks I came across the boks Hatha Yoga by Yogi Ramachakara and Yoga Self-Taught by Andr? van Lysbeth and became interested in Yoga. I have since begun to attempt various postures in the order of the “Rishikesh” series. However, when I perform the “Corpse” posture (Shavasana) on a hard surface (as directed), I feel nauseous.
When I attempt to perform the shoulder-stand, I cannot raise my legs to the vertical during the dynamic stage while keeping the entire length of my back on the ground. The small of my back is fairly hollow (I place a towel under it to prevent stressing it during the raising of my legs) and my legs are very inflexible.
What exercises will allow me to keep the length of my back on the floor while raising my legs to 90 degrees?
Also, I feel nauseous during the counter-posture for Sarvangasana (Matsyasana) when I lower my head to the floor. Is there another counter posture that I can substitute for Matsyasana?
I am 6’4, 18 yrs old, about 180 lbs. I appreciate your help!
