Neck and Posture Problem

I have a posture and neck problem that has been bothering me since I was 12. I find that my neck is not straight up like most necks. It is tilted down a bit less then 45 degrees and I can’t straighten it. Its tilted about as much as this dash “/”. I tried fixing the problem with sitting up as straight I could go, but that didn’t do anything. I also might have a bit of a swayback. This problem I have is quite embarrassing when I go swimming, because it is most noticable without a shirt. I was just wondering of Yoga could help straighten up my neck somewhat, because I really don’t know what to do next. Also, I’m only 15, so I can’t get a yoga trainer, or anything like that, it would have to be by myself. So… can yoga help my neck problem?

That’s a tricky question Blakren.

Please bear in mind that I am a yoga teacher and not a medical professional. My feedback should not be misinterpreted as medical advice. That should be sought from the health care practitioner you and your folks have chosen.

Since you are 15 the nature of your spine is still forming and you have the advantage of very rapid healing. The neck is actually curved as though you were lying on the floor with a rolled up yoga mat under the back of your throat.

You can begin a simple practice similar to this by rolling up a small blanket or mat, lying down on your back, and placing the roll just beneath the back of your skull. I suggest it for bed time however if that seems too challenging then twice per day (morning and evening) for about five relaxing minutes each.

It would be best to work with a teacher. So my suggestion here is to find a sound, alignment-based yoga studio where there are therapeutically trained teachers (you must ask this) then VOLUNTEER your time there in exchange for classes or the like.

Yoga can help support your body’s own healing process but it does take time and commitment.
