Need help: One side of hips/knees never balanced

Hi-I have a severe imbalance on the left side of my body with my hip/knee and I need some posture suggestions. I can never, ever get my left knee to lay flat when the leg is folded in a seated position and it’s painful to try. I can’t even wrap my right leg around my left knee in a spinal twist without serious pain in my knee, nor does my left buttocks come anywhere near the ground…yet my other leg works fine. What is a good posture to eliminate this problem so my hips/knees on one side are more imbalance with the other? Whatever I’m doing does not help. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Much thanks-Kate

How long have you been practicing Kate? I’m no yoga expert, but I find my left side is the naturally weak side which I have to work harder on to align myself properly in certain poses. From my experience, even though I am constantly working on it, over time I find myself more balanced. I’m sure a teacher will be more qualified to answer your question, but one of the points of yoga is for us to find that balance and the more you practice the more balanced, flexible and stronger you will become  keep at it!

Hello Kate,

It seems you’re requesting both an assessment and some direction.
In order to provide both in a sound fashion more information is required baout you and your practice.

How are you currently living, (lifestyle), what are you currently eating, what is your profession and what does it involve physically, how ald are you, what is your fitness level, and what are you doing currently in your practice that has no efficacy?

i too am tighter on the left side. sitting cross legged has always been difficult for me. however, in the past six months ardha titali asana has greatly helped increase my flexibility and general ability to sit in meditative asanas. my left side is still tighter but getting better. practice practice practice. here is a good video describing ardha titali, or half butterfly. just make sure to be very careful and stretch the hip without over stressing the knee.

ok i guess i can’t post links, so youtube “ardha titali” and a good video comes up from someone named “ManojtheYogi” definitely worth checking out
