Needs advice

G’day, im Nathan, im new to this forum and am looking for some advice, I am currently looking at starting yoga, Im a tradesman and a currently studing certificate 3 and 4 in fitness to start a career in Personal training, I find myself stressed alot of the time and feeling tight from weight training, and yoga has took my interest to benifit myself by reducing stress and stretching my body.
I am also interested in adding Yoga to supplement my personal training for my clients, im also quite interested in the lifestyle that it can bring.
So as you can see im fairly interested to get started but im way over my head on this and would much rather to practice yoga on my own instead of a class at the moment, so with all that in mind i would love some advice on what type of yoga which would suit me, maybe any films or books which would be great in that practice to help me start or anything else you would like to add, thoughts are all welcome

Cheers

Hello Nathan,

Welcome to the forum.

It’s not possible for others to say what practice is unequivocally “right” for you. That is a process that is actually part of yoga itself - the cultivation of discernment.

I have seen two basic choices in situations like yours. The first is a heaping on, a more of the same, an adding to the fire, a stoking. In that instance one usually selects a practice just like their living. For the sloth it would be a quiet, sedate practice. For the doer, the action figure, it would be a fiery, active, rapid practice.

The second is a counter. In that scenario the person selects a practice that is opposite their current nature, a practice that facilitates change and a looking at themselves, identifying their needs, addressing their imbalances, etcetera. The sloth would select an active practice while the doer may select a slower, more moderate practice.

And in both of these I am referring mostly to the practice of asana as that is most of what is offered these days in the ever-growing shallow end of our world pool. Hopefully you’ll select a practice that offers much much more.

I personally find a good book or DVD to be a supplement to a practice transmitted from teacher to student. Some agree while others do not. But that is my view. You can begin anywhere but well trained teachers are hard to find. In light of that I would advocate a mindful aproach to whatever you choose and some time alone feeling the residue of the practice so that you may determine if you want to stick there or try another.

You would probably like Journey into Power by Byron Baptist…

I still would recommend take one class a week at different places to find out what you like… there are many different kinds of yoga…
