New

Hello everyone, I’m Ashleigh (I prefer Ashe - silent E). I’m new to the forums here, but I’m not new to forums in general.

After giving birth to my daughter and having to stop breastfeeding I gained back all my pregnancy weight and then some. I was 100lbs over my target weight for my height. I have a lung condition that prohibits me from doing strenuous cardio, and a friend of mine recommended that I try yoga for weight loss. I thought he was joking, but after mentioning it to my doctor, she thought it was a great idea.
I had no idea where to start, so I just went to walmart, bought a yoga mat (which came with a 20 minute DVD) and bought a DVD called Yoga for Wight Loss. The results have been incredible. I’ve gained weight, but it’s all in lean muscle and Ive lost inches everywhere. My doctor is extremely proud. But I’ve noticed, it’s not just my body that has been affected, my whole life has. When I practice yoga, it’s like I have found an inner peace. And I want to start doing this, no longer as a method for weight loss, but as a lifestyle.

Thus presents my problem, I have no idea how to do this. I know there is so much more to yoga than just a few poses during exercise… So, I thought Id join this forum, and see what help and information I might get. I look forward to talking to you alland becoming a part of this little community.

YogaTutor1,
Do you happen to have a translator readily available on this site? I can’t read that, and translators online don’t seem to work properly.

That’s incredible Ashe! I would recommend getting a couple of books to augment your practice and provide you with some resources. Light on Yoga by Iyengar, Yoga as Medicine by Timothy McCall, PHD, Rodney Yee has several too, The Tree of Yoga also by Iyengar and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Chopra are all good books to start. I’m sure others will suggest their favorites. These are mine and what I started with.

Was the DVD on Weight Loss with Susanne Deason? If so, it is a very good one.

Meditation and breath work (pranayam) is also a very important component that should not be overlooked. Have you thought about taking a yoga class? Are there any studios locally? A home practice is very important, but taking classes under the guidance of a qualified teacher is also. They can guide you as far as alignment in the poses and meditation and pranayam.

An incredible journey, isn’t it? Best of luck! Looking forward to following you on your journey!

Welcome to the forum!

lotusgirl,

The DVD was made by a company called element and the instructor is Ashley Turner. I’ll definitely look into those books. As far as classes go, I haven’t looked into anything around here because I’m an army wife and my husband is deployed, so I’ve been traveling a lot lately.
It truly is an incredible journey and thank you very much for your input!

Hello ,

I am Managing a Registered Yoga Institute since long back.
it is my personal experience that Yoga is absolutely a individual improvement Pro gramme.

So if You learn yoga through a BOOK or CD, major drawback is that U can see the fellow who is performing Yoga in CD or BOOk but who is look after U if U are doing wrong ?

that’s why I am of the firm opinion that Yoga practice must be start under the close observation of Learned and Experienced Yoga Guru, who can teach U properly and personally.
