Newbie ....and need advice!

Can yoga help heart situations that are caused by stress.

And also I have had a recent issue with anxiety and sometimes feel like I am having a panic attack. I have even worked myself up to passing out before.

Can yoga maybe help these situations?? I am desparate and I am new to yoga. I have tried a few times from videos and love the way it makes me feel.

Yes Midnight, absolutely yoga can help these things.

While DVDs are a great start a qualified teacher is really the one who can guide you to working with your breath and meditation to help relieve the situations you talk about.

Folks often talk about the cost of classes but I think the perspective needs to change. Think of the money you save on health care by being proactive and taking yoga. Think of the peaceful happy years of life you can have.

Oh I hope you can find a good teacher where you are. Good luck!

No…I live in a small town. No classes or teahers. I really don’t understand how to breathe correctly. I don’t think most of the world really knows how to breathe. We are all stressed and take little breaths and get headaches, etc. Can you recommend a website to help learn how to take a deep breathe. I just don’t think I am doing it right.

Hey there, Midnight. Here’s a verbal description from elsewhere in the forums:

The search tool might help you find others.

PS – yoga folks aren’t always that good at self promotion, so I hope you have not concluded that there is a lack of yoga teachers because you didn’t find one on the web or in the phone book. If there’s an organic grocer in your town the manager there would be a good place to start a word-of-mouth search.

Hello Midnight,

just to clarify…

Some things in yoga can aggravate anxiety rather than abate it. Some pranayama (breathing) can be inappropriate for anxiety issues. Some postures can be inappropriate for those with heart issues as the posture or actions or lack of alignment placed pressure on the diaphragm which, in turn, places pressure on the heart.

It is for this reason that an answer to “can yoga help this” can only be “a certain sort of practice would in fact be very helpful”.

Thanks for the clarity InnerAthlete.
