Newbie

Hello,

Just wanted to say hello, and so glad to have found a place to share ideas.
I am totally new to yoga, 2 weeks new to be exact. I have to tell you after my first few sessions I felt so great, by the end of my week I had a sense of disapline and an awaking feeling. I have included meditation and love it.
Of course I am having a hard time with positions. I was wondering…like with the downward dog, how long do you think it will be before my feet (heels) will be able to touch the floor and is there anything I can do to progress. Keep in mind I am practicing on my own with various DVD’s. Thank you so much.

Sadhi

Hey there Sadhi,

Welcome!

The ability to touch the ground with your heels while in that pose will come with time and practice. Untill that time is now, don’t worry because it does not mean that the pose is not good already.

I understand that it is nice to be able to do all poses in perfect form, but that will come gradually and it does not mean at all that you cannot benefit from the poses already when they are not yet ‘perfect’ in form.

Love,
B.

You are already doing what is needed to progress.
Apply the fifth item required in order to be a student of yoga - patience.

Sadhi – welcome to the forums! I hope you will find, as I have, a diverse and sincere community.
While learning how to apply patience to my progression in asanas, I have found it is helpful to maintain a curious attitude regarding the body part or frame of mind I am “working” on. Not only does it help me notice my progress, but by keeping up my awareness it lets me do exactly what my body can do, rather than (for me, torpidly) settling for less or (monkey-like) striving for more.

It’ll take what time it should take, given what else you ask of your body.
