I AM STARTING MY FIRST CLASS THIS SATURDAY. HONESTLY, I AM NERVOUS AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT (BUT I DO KNOW I WANT TO DO IT). CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON WHAT MATERIALS I SHOULD BRING, IE: MAT, WATER, TOWEL. THE LADY SAID THEY OFFER MATS, BUT I KNOW YOU SWEAT ALOT SO WOULD IT BE WISE TO HAVE MY OWN MAT. I JUST SEE SO MANY ACCESSOIRES OUT THERE AND DO NOT KNOW WHAT I SHOULD BE BUYING.

ALSO, IF ANYONE COULD GIVE ME SOME HEADS UP ON WHAT I AM ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE I WOULD APPRECIATE THAT ALSO.

Just bring a towel for your first class, use one of their mats. See how it goes. You live in Mira Loma? What class are you going to?

Hi Kelly,

Why are you yelling? You’ve certainly got my attention. Can we go to lowercase whispering and use your “inforum voice”?

Different asana classes have different environments and therefore different needs. So we can only guess for you based on what you’ve shared.

If you have chosen a practice in which the external heat is increased then you might need water, a towel, and assorted other beach accessories.

If on the other hand you’ve selected a practice where that which is external is irrelevant, including the heat, then you can likely go to class without beachwear and get by on your normal daily hydration of half your body weight in ounce of consumed hydrating fluids.

A studio that has a sweaty practice should have a frisky mat cleaning protocol. That is something you should be shopping as the consumer. Please ask the studio “how often are mats cleaned?”. Otherwise, BYOM.

Yoga itself is experiential. And no two experiences are identical. Further, it would taint the process (for you) to try and tell you what you’ll get. That is why you are going, to find out what need/want/get. Enjoy that and soak up every drop - except the one plopping on the mat.

My apologies Zen Master, no more shouting. Thank you for your suggestions and comments. You are so right that it would taint the process. I need to learn what best fits me. I am looking into the one mat Manduka black mat. Do you have any comments on this mat? Again, thank you for pointing out the shouting. I guess this is why I have chosen to bring yoga into my life. Calm… BYE

LOL, first shouting. Now repeating yourself. Classic Kelly. A little color in the otherwise “drab” climate.

I have not used the mat you mention. I personally would not buy a black mat - or anything else black when there is a color choice. I believe they have a purple mat. I have heard they are a bit heavy and a bit pricey. Other than that, I cannot comment relative to asana practice on one of them.

Come on I am new to this site … practice makes perfect. Again, another great suggestion. Heavy is something I do not want and black does not match my personality. I just didn’t want to start a new class and stand out, but I can’t worry about that. By the way the weather is great here is California.

Kelly, We really are on the same page, I have yoga mat anxiety! lol … I actually decided to choose an earth toned one with a lotus flower on it!, subdued and earthy, just like me  I didnt realize how much my yoga mat reflected my personality until I saw your comment about your yoga mat not being “you”.

I’ll let you know how I do this Saturday… I hope I come out of there wanting to go back! : )
