No Kneecap!

Hi Guys,

A testing question for you; I have a new student who has no kneecap on his right knee (yes, you read that correctly, NO kneecap at all).

Any suggestions on benefial poses as well as poses to be avoided? I’d really appreciate any advice, this is a new one for me

With thanks,
Kate

beneficial poses, ill let others answer. Ones to be avoided, any that cause excess stress and that is up to him to be aware of that

Hello Kate,
I am not sure how much your student has shared with you, but I do have some questions to ask you, before I can offer more.
Is this congenital or was there injury?
Are there are other anomalies around the knee or elsewhere in the body?
Does he have pain?
I are you working with him in a classroom or are you offering one-on-one sessions?
What are his expressed limitations and abilities? What have you observed regarding these?
Has he come to you for Yoga therapy or for class?
Has he personally raised concern around his knee or asked for accommodations?
sorry One more question
What are his objectives for working together?

I’m in Nichole’s camp on this. The first thing that popped into my mind was whether it was surgically removed. That would open up an entire discourse on when, how, etcetera.

Thanks for your time chaps. Further details:

  • Male, 48 years old
  • Kneecap removed surgically approx 10 years ago after football (soccer) injury
  • No other injuries
  • He has pain and occasional swelling in and around the knee if he jars it too much. Nonetheless he is a very active man, he also plays tennis.
  • The only issue he is concerned about is dislocating the knee - thus has to be cautious of any movement that moves the knee side to side. Bending of the knee is fine and even Virasana (supported) is fine.
  • He comes to my beginners group class
