NY Times Article

I was reading this NY Times article on how more yoga studios are cropping up to specifically cater to those who are overweight - I think there’s a huge market out there for this sort of thing and think it’s a great idea. What do you guys think?

Here’s the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/health/nutrition/14fitness.html?_r=1&ref=health&pagewanted=all

My concern is only that yoga be shared. I don’t think in terms of slim bodies, big bodies, flexible bodies etcetera. The catering is to the soul not the suit.

But I understand how this can be a focus in some “expressions” of yoga and I’m all for access to Yoga being available to anyone who desires growing closer to their Self.

I agree! That’s a great way to put it: “yoga should be shared”. That’s why I’m glad there are all types of yoga out there so that we have choices to practice based on what suits our needs best.

Haha, I’m sure you don’t agree with Bikram Choudbury patenting “Bikram Yoga” then. :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually the patenting I agree with completely. In the context of a capitalist framework it can be both prudent and necessary - when it is in integrity and utilized to hold Yoga in order to respectfully maintain its evolution.

Crafting a system only to secure intellectual property rights strikes me as a bit smarmy, not to mention the promotion of competition and what appears to be excess and flamboyance. But that could just be me.
