Opening a Studio

Hi All,

I’m new to the forum and decided to join after reading some insightful posts here.

I’m looking to open a new studio and have searched the internet to better understand what size of space I should be looking for. What I found is that you should estimate 21 sq. ft per student. But this seems so small.

Then, nothing about figuring in the “extras” (office, reception area, changing/shower rooms).

Any thoughts/advice here?

Thanks, ashley

Ashley,

21 sq ft is about the size of one mat. You need a minimum of roughly an additional two feet to each side (about the width of one more mat on each side). Or, if the space is wide enough for two bodies, head-to-foot, then you can stagger another body in each of those additional two-foot spaces. Like this:

I–I--I–I--I
-I–I--I–I--

I call this New York style. Have them line up facing center, shoulder to shoulder. Of course if money is no object, the more space the better. Nothing worse than more people showing up than you have room for.

good luck,

We renovated a space that was 1,200 sqft total. On entrance the first 15 ft deep is the reception area w/changing rooms and bench’s to sit on. Then into the studio is 800 sq ft and the final back area has a small bathroom and space for cleaning stuff and supplies. We can fit 32 max which is tight. Bigger is always better.

On average, studios are between 800 - 1200 sq ft. There are smaller and larger, of course. A good, welcoming foyer will encourage students to linger and chat, which helps build community. Changerooms are essential in this competitive era, since a lot of yoga ‘spas’ are popping up with $500,000 refits, but showers are not essential if you are not hot yoga.

Figure on 24 sq ft per person.
