Padmasana after eating, really uncomfortable, why?

I never really thought about it much before but since I sit a little for meditation both before and after breakfast (for no particular reason) I’ve started to notice a huge difference in how it feels.

Before breakfast the full lotus pose is just fine. I can sit pretty long even without being bothered by very much. Eventually my feet will get a little numb but even that will pass if I wait it out.

After breakfast it’s soon quite uncomfortable. It’s like the feet pressing on the thighs creates a tension in the upper body. It’s far from relaxing and doesn’t work as a meditation pose. Virasana is just fine after breakfast.

Of course the thing to do is to not sit in full lotus after breakfast but I just wonder what’s going on physically.

Vajrasana is also good after breakfast (or any other meal).
For me it is more relaxing than Virasana.
Most asanas should be done with an empty stomach, it`s a known recommendation.

Try Eka Pada Supta Virasana starting on the right side (right leg back in Virasana. This will effect the ascending colon. Then change sides and this will effect the descending colon.

Obviously the effect(s) depend on the actions of the practitioner (which is why we effort to actually learn the pose as opposed to just flopping in to something we see externally).

But this should help with the digestion.

Hi Friend!
Padmasana or Lotus posture is a meditative posture. It must be practiced on empty stomach or at least 3-4 hours after meal. After having food, Vajrasana is the only recommended posture, it stimulates the Jatharagni which helps the digestion process.

Take care!
