Pain in outer hip in the joint in Frog pose

I tend to get a rather sharp pain in my outer hip (it almost feels like its the joint itself) when I am in poses that externally rotate my femur.

Good examples of poses where I can really feel it are:

  • Supta Baddha Konasana
  • Mandukasana

I’ve been doing yoga for about 5 years now and practicing about 5 times a week for the last 8 months.

The sharp pain has always been there, but I figured it would go away as my body loosened up and my practice improved. I’ve made a ton of progress in my practice but the pain still remains.

Anyone out there have any ideas? Tendonitis?

Has the question been posed to your teacher? If so, what was the response and how/why has that not served you? If the question has not been posed to your teacher, why not?

So wait, the guy that is a kinesiologist, which I thought was the study of how the body moves, responds to my question with a question?

Here goes. I go to 3 studios and have several teachers. Three that I trust completely. Yes, I have asked all of them and heard things like, “That might be your IT band”, or “take it easy for a while”.

How has that not served me? It isn’t really anything definitive. My purpose of posting here was to see if others have had a similar experience or maybe get some feedback from someone that has had a formal education in, oh I don’t know, kinesiology.

So, any thoughts on what physical structures are being stressed in the hip area in those poses, or should I just go to an ortho straightaway.

I am not a kinesiologist, but I do manage instructors. I can safely say that if you are experiencing sharp pain - that’s not good. My instructors tell me that they would either discourage you from using that posture and suggest an alternate, or use bolsters to support you in that posture.

In any case, it would be very difficult for even a trained physician to diagnose your pain on an internet forum. If we were sitting next to each other on a bus and you told me that 3 trusted yoga instructors were not able to give you a definitive solution to alleviate your pain, I would suggest you go to an ortho straightaway.
