Pilates vs yoga

What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?

There are way too many ways to answer this question. You’ve got to be more specific.

Pilates

Yoga

Hatha Yoga

Pilates is a phsyical system developed by a single human being for the purposes of rehabilitating the injuries of military personnel. It is about 60 year old and may combine elements from many “other” modalities. It tends to focus on biomechanics with an emphasis on core musculature.

Yoga is a vast system, unknowable in the span of one lifetime, dating back millions of years and we’re not sure who or whom gifted it to humanity. It is a system for the mindful evolution of human beings. It is a system which provides us direction to reduce suffering. It is a system which provides us a framework for relating to ourselves, others, and the Universe. Oh, and it has a small sliver called asana which addresses healing the physical form so that it may hold the light of the soul.

Actually, in the words of Joseph Pilates, ‘Contrology (the name Pilates gave to his exercises) is complete coordination of mind, body and spirit.’ No where in his books does he mention exercises specifically for military personnel. When he was asked by the German government to train special forces, he declined. So I’m not sure where you’re getting this conclusion from.

The works of Joseph Pilates has a very holistic approach and sound method, which has unfortunately been watered down and misunderstood.

Please read ‘Return to Life Through Contrology,’ and ‘Your Health’ both by Joseph Pilates.
