I’m getting into the habit of practicing for maybe 20-30 minutes in a morning before breakfast, going about my day, and doing the same in the evening. Is this just as good as a full hours session? Or should I be doing longer sessions less frequently?
It all depends Chloe.
There’s no set rule per se, no one correct way, no single answer which fits everyone in all cases.
That having been said, when a student wants to explore themselves through postures offering them a higher degree of challenge it makes sense to prepare the body to do so. The sequencing of an asana practice can be done haphazardly or wisely, and all points in between. Redying for some poses make take 60-70 minutes.
But generally speaking there’s nothing inherently “wrong” with a 30-minute practice in the morning and a 30-minute practice in the evening. I would likely do different things in a morning practice than I would in an evening practice. And I feel it’s important for beginning students to develop the discipline of coming to the mat regularly (moving toward daily). So I would not suggest to my students to lengthen the duration of the practice WHILE decreasing the frequency.
